Arne had received and decoded the invitation for the private Rose Party what seemed like hours ago. Having previously been friends with the lot who were throwing this party meant that even though he wasn’t the most scholarly or Sherlock Holmes-y, he was used to their antics and though they just weren’t for him, he was contemplating joining later. Arne took a long drag and slowly exhaled, a cloud of smoke emerging from his lips and curling up towards the stars. He thought he’d overheard a couple of the purebloods in another year talking about how they’d sneak their Muggleborn and mixed blood friends in, something which intrigued Arne further. What could be better than party crashers, after all?

As he emerged from some bushes which had been shielding his position on the lake’s edge from any passersby and began to walk towards the school, meandering slowly back and forth between the school’s direction and the direction of the party (he still hadn’t completely made up his mind), he stumbled over a slim, blonde witch with fearsome blue eyes .She kind of looked like a guardian nymph and Arne laughed at the thought. His bleary eyes read the sign she had planted beside her and he popped a squat. After all, she had cookies.

“Say, fair nymph,” he said with a grin. “You wouldn’t mind sparing a moment to educate me of your ways while I cop some of these cookies, yeah?”

“Smoking’s bad for you,” she said plainly without a smile. “Are you going into that party?”

Arne shrugged. “Dunno,” he replied honestly, reaching out to take a cookie even though she hadn’t said yes. She swatted his hand away and Arne looked at her in surprise. Well she was feisty. “If there’s nothing better to do, why not?”

“Because it’s promoting elitism and as global citizens we have to do our part to stop it.”

“As global citizens…” Arne trailed off, eyebrows raised. “You do realize that it’s just a high school party, right?”

“Yeah, and boys will be boys and oh, it was just a joke. Please.” The younger witch rolled her eyes. “These are all excuses. And it’s how harmless behaviour turns into something much worse. Yeah, we’re having fun now, but what happens twenty years down the line when the very people who invited us purebloods and us purebloods only are adults and start getting into those coveted ‘in charge’ positions their parents probably had all the connections for? Will it still be purebloods first and only?”

Arne supposed she had a point. But did she have to make it here? During a party? And ruin his buzz? “And you think your protest is going to stop things?”

“It’s a start.”

She was so earnest, so serious in her stance, Arne couldn’t help but admire her for it. “When I was your age, I didn’t know up from down,” he finally said to her. “You keep doing you, kid.” He put out his stub, ignoring the wrinkled nose of his politically active, young companion. He wasn’t sure if it was because of the smoking or the ‘kid,’ but he didn’t care either way, he needed to find something to eat and it seemed like the party would be the best place to do it but if he knew these guys, he knew he’d never be allowed in with his grey hoodie and ripped, grease-stained blue jeans. “See you ‘round.”

It was on his walk back to the school that he saw a very forlorn Laila Kennedy being dragged along behind a determined looking Layla Dawson. “Have fun trying to get in, Kennedy,” he jibbed as they passed each other on the walkway. “Buzzkills aren’t wanted.” An idea suddenly struck him and he turned to watch the girls hurry away, Laila’s middle finger extended in response to his compliment and he chuckled. Yes, he really was the perfect cupid.

Upon his return to the school, he made his way to the Horned Serpent’s dormitory. Sure, he wasn’t supposed to know where the other houses were but he was a Seventh Year now. He was pretty sure he knew most of the nooks and crannies of the school. He’d spent six years wandering it’s halls after all. Well, that and Maple O’Malley (and unfortunate name if he’d ever heard one) and recent graduate of Ilvermorny had been a Horned Serpent and unusually clingy during their brief dalliance and so he’d walked her back to her house a few late nights.

“Chevalier!” He yelled as he pounded on the wall behind the knight which he’d seen Maple disappear into many nights. “Open up, Chevalier, I know what you should do but you have to come with me right now! Chevalier!” It wasn’t quite curfew yet, so Arne didn’t think his yelling would draw attention to anything. A portrait did give him a dirty look, however, and disappeared from its frame.

Cian Chevalier

Layla Dawson for mentions and for later

So the portrait left to go get Cian because 1) Arne was knocking behind the wrong statue and 2) He was being annoying. But the knight which Arne was knocking behind is in the same corridor, just halfway down it.

Also, Arne's previous friendship with the party hosts discussed with Kyara.

It took another student tapping Cian on the shoulder for the portrait to successfully get his attention. He looked up from his book and the student pointed out the waving portrait. Cian pointed to himself with eyebrows raised to which the student nodded, a mildly irritated look on their face. Cian could deduce that the portrait most have been making some noise. He looked to the portrait and tried to interpret the handwaving and gesticulating. The occupant of the portrait jabbed a finger toward the door of the common room. Still rather confused, Cian got up, depositing his book on one of the side tables, and made his way out of the common room.

At first he didn’t see anything and not being able to hear Arne’s wild yelling he almost went back inside. Taking a look down the corridor, however, he caught sight of his friend pounding on the wall behind another knight. With an amused smile, Cian walked toward Arne. Had he forgotten he was deaf or did he just assume that if he made enough of a racket, someone would finally get Cian’s attention? He couldn’t exactly criticize, however, given that the tactic had actually worked.

Cian rapped on the knight with a knuckle to get Arne’s attention. When Arne’s attention was on him, Cian gave him a questioning look through his still amused smile. What could be so urgent? Hopefully nothing serious. Cian knew nothing of the planned party. If there had been whispers throughout the day, he had not heard. Had he been paying attention, perhaps he would have noticed a shift in attitude among some of the students, but he hadn't been. Cian tended to stay as far away from the gossip as possible. He neither was nor cared to be in with the popular clique of students.

After quite a lot of knocking down the wrong wall, Cian eventually emerged from down the hall and Arne beamed, not even taking a second to be ashamed that he'd gotten the location wrong. "Hey there, buddy!" he called out happily, red words curling down the hallway at Cian. "Have I got news for you!"

He was grinning from ear to ear. He knew Cian wasn't the biggest fan of purebloods--his friend didn't have to outright say it for Arne to pick up on the underlying frustration there. But this was Cian's chance to tell Laila that he liked her. Showing up at a party he would never, ever be caught dead at just to tell her how he felt? How utterly mushy, gushy romantic. If Arne knew Laila Kennedy (and they had been in the same class since they were five years old so he thought he knew he pretty well), then Laila Kennedy would eat it up.

"But the thing is..." His eyes darted from side to side. "Do you have your notebook? I have to tell you something but it has to be hush-hush, top secret. It concerns your little..." Arne winked hard in Cian's direction. "Love secret."

So Laila wasn't around (or Layla for that matter) but Arne didn't know who else could be eavesdropping on them, which portraits could be ready to spread rumours. And besides, wasn't there that nasty little ghost girl who liked to make deals and ruin people's lives? She was probably single handedly responsible for much of the drama the previous year with Cian's twin and the love potion (well, love potioneer aside).

As glad as he was to be waylaid by his friend, Cian eyed Arne’s beaming face with just a little bit of apprehension. That smile reminded him of Chloe when she got one of her schemes into her head. Sure enough, Arne looked furtively around the hall before alluding to what they had talked about out in the courtyard the previous day. Cian’s mood immediately sobered up and his eyebrows raised questioningly. At least Arne seemed excited about it. Whatever he had up his sleeve he seemed to think was a good idea. However, given it was Arne, that wasn’t necessarily the most reassuring thing.

Cian nodded at his question. As always, the small notebook was stashed away in his pocket. He handed it over then shifted nervously from foot to foot as he waited for Arne to write out his message and give it back. Ok, so this was apparently going to be it, whatever it was the Arne had planned. When he had finally gotten around to talking to someone about Laila, Cian hadn’t expected to be pushed into confronting her so quickly. He had been planning on spending another few weeks anxiously loitering in a state of indecision.

Cian handed over the notebook and Arne began to scribble furiously in it. He didn't really know where to start so he figured he'd probably start at the beginning. After all, Cian had to know that he wasn't planning on going to the party, he was only there for one of his nighttime strolls when he'd seen it.

"So like I was there, right? At the lake and then there were these people and this little girl, one of those Coven ones, protesting. And then I was like oh right, there's that party, and then I saw them."

He paused for a moment so Cian could catch up reading what he was writing. It was important that Cian stay up to date because Arne had SO MUCH to tell him!

"So there they were, Layla dragging Laila both of them flipping me off when it occurred to me! I was just going to come back to the school, steal something from the kitchen, head to bed, the usu. But! Tonight is your night, buddy! Go put on your dancing shoes because we are going to an exclusive party and you are telling Laila how you feel because what's more romantic than gate crashing a party you wouldn't normally be caught dead at to tell another gate crasher that you like them?"

By now, Arne was nodding and grinning. Man, he was the best wingman on the planet. Ooh, wings! He hoped the party would have wings. He deserved some after this.

It was a good thing that Arne had decided to write everything down, not just for the secrecy but also because it was difficult to even follow what he was talking about. Cian had to look back over it just to piece it together and he was still confused. A party? What party? Why was one of the Coven witches protesting it? Aside from Cian simply not liking parties, why would he not show up to this one in particular? There were so any questions that Cian didn’t even know if he should bother getting into it.

It was an idea, though, he had to admit. Better than any idea he had come up with himself. Since he had finally talked to Arne he had been trying to come up with some kind of gesture to win her over. The more he thought about it, the more anxious he grew. What if he messed it up? What if he did something that she thought was lame? So far he had gotten nowhere and here Arne was, suggesting something that might even work. At least it was a start and he could see how things went when they got there.

Ok, he signed, somewhat hesitantly. I’ll be back, he added. It was all simple signing, so he assumed Arne would understand just fine. He then set off back to the Horned Serpent room to “put on his dancing shoes”. Had he had more options, it would have been a more difficult choice, but he didn’t really. He had just the one suit reserved for the winter formal. Not knowing what kind of party this was and afraid he would look over-dressed, he opted for a black t-shirt under the blazer and a nice pair of jeans.

After getting dressed, he tried to make his hair do something attractive. He inspected himself in the mirror, wishing that there was someone in his house he felt comfortable enough to ask to help him out. While Cian dressed passably, he didn’t care all that much about his style and it was weird to try to inspect himself for looks. He suddenly found himself wondering if he would look better without glasses, but then there wasn’t exactly anything he could do about that. Sighing, he decided it would have to be fine. If he wasted any more time Laila wouldn’t even be there anymore.

When he was back out in the hallway with Arne, Cian spread his arms so that Arne could see the outfit. He raised his eyebrows at him in a questioning look, waiting for his friend’s judgment.

Cian agreed readily which was lucky for both of them because if he’d said no, Arne would have had to use force and the last thing he wanted to do was to accidentally-on-purpose hurt his best friend while trying to help him. Even though Cian had basically asked him to stay put by saying he’d be right back, Arne knew that he also needed to get changed. His jeans were stained with grass and car grease from the summer and his white t-shirt was ratty and old, covered up with an equally disheveled grey hoodie. He was not at all in elite-party-style clothes, so he dashed off to the Wampus dorms. He knew how to dress for these things so he figured he could get ready before Cian was even down the Horned Serpent dorm stairs or whatever it was they had in there.

By the time Arne got back to the Horned Serpent dorms, Cian was just coming out and Arne was pleased to see that his friend cleaned up well. Arne himself was wearing a cleaner white t-shirt than the one he’d had on previously with dark jeans and a leather jacket. He’d gotten it for his birthday that summer and taken to swaggering around town like he owned the place—the jacket made him feel Bad Ass.

“Sexy,” he said with a nod of approval. He didn’t think he’d ever had to comment on a guy’s appearance before so even though it felt a little weird, he just went with what he’d normally tell Cass. His words were visible now since there wasn’t really much need for secrecy now that the discussion of Cian’s plan was finished. Besides, he couldn’t walk and write so it would only slow them down if they were both using the notebook. “Shall we?”

He would help Cian find Laila, then he would find himself a girl and some wings. He didn’t really care which order they came in as long as his bro-duty was filled and his stomach satisfied with juicy chicken dripping with sauce. He felt his mouth almost watering at the thought. Merlin, they needed to get a move on before he starved to death in the hallway!

As the word sexy materialized near Arne with his production of the word, Cian laughed. Actually laughed, the first time he had done so in front of Arne. With his nervousness over the situation it was a tense sound, but it was a sound nonetheless. It was a rarity for Cian, an indication that, despite his anxiety, Arne could always manage to lighten the mood. Cian pointed to Arne and gave a thumbs up then signed sexy back.

Cian fidgeted with his hands nervously as he followed Arne to the secret party. As they walked, he tried to think of what he would say to Laila and how he could direct the conversation that way. He should probably prepare a response if she said she didn’t feel the same way, right? He really did not want to mess up their friendship. Even if she didn’t feel the same way at all, he wouldn’t want to lose what they already had. It had taken him so long to make his friends.

Heading out into the dark grounds, Cian wondered where exactly they were heading. Then again, he supposed a secret party would have to be well away from the castle. To make things easier, Cian summoned one of his balls of light to hover over their heads as they walked so that they could see better. It was one of the first signed magic spells he had mastered and he found it far more convenient than ‘lumos’ since it freed up his hands for writing or signing.

Arne grinned as they left for the party—Cian had a nice laugh, it was a shame he didn’t do it more often. Her was certain that his best and only bro could get by a lot smoother with the ladies if he could only let loose with them a little. There was no way Laila couldn’t see the amazing qualities that were in his bro. And if she couldn’t? Her loss. She wasn’t the special, anyway.

The twists and turns of the walk back to the party were made much easier with the aid of Cian’s little balls of light, an impressive magical feat to be sure. Yeah, his pal was pretty cool and if that Kennedy girl couldn’t see that then… Arne shook his head to himself. Maybe it would be a good thing in the long run—she could save Cian a lot of heartache and Arne a lot of headache if he didn’t have to see them together or listen to them talk about each other. Suddenly he was having second thoughts about helping Cian—if he did and they got together, then Laila would be around more often and that wasn’t something Arne wanted at all.

But then he thought back to how happy Cian looked when he’d been ready for the party and he made up his mind to see it out, hell or high water. “If there’s not wings at this party when we get there,” Arne was threatening, trying to keep the conversation light, when he saw a couple figure coming down the road from the party together. He squinted to try and see who they were. “Is that—”

He cut himself off, hoping Cian wouldn’t be too upset to see Laila with the prince of heartbreak, Sebastian Holtzer. “Maybe the party wasn’t so great after all?” He shrugged. At least now Cian wouldn’t have to go in somewhere he wouldn’t even want to go. It was now or never, do or die, to be or not to be. Okay, well that last little cliche didn’t quite fit in the way he thought it would but the point was there. It was Cian’s moment of reckoning.

Sebastian had enough of the Rose party already. He'd made a number of mistakes in the heat of the moment, nearly drowned, shared his animagus secret and attempted to treat Laila for whatever made her ill. It was time to get her out of the party area, allow her to sleep it off. He'd have to find Layla, and let her know about her roommate, so that she could keep an eye on Laila. If she took a turn for the worse, then at least his best friend could help the girl to the hospital wing.

But should he turn in for the night too? What if someone else has a negative reaction to the punch? Or anything else going on at the party? He was already having a miserable time. And the temptation to try out whatever it was that was making everyone so happy, ate at his conscience. He knew he shouldn't, but it was a struggle to resist. Sebastian knew he couldn't leave just yet, or give in to the temptation, just in case someone else needed his help. He had medical knowledge, though limited, he needed to remain the responsible one at the party.

Instead he focused on Laila, and helping her navigate her way out of the party. Watching for signs that she might be getting worse. He hoped that his earlier spell would help pull the gunk out of her system.

He nodded and offered a grim smile to Arne and Cian as Sebastian kept a hand at Laila's back to guide her towards the exit, and be ready to catch her if she fell.
"Stay away from the punch, guys." He managed to stop long enough to sign while giving them the warning.

Cian was good at walking and communicating at the same time. However, it was a little more difficult while trying to navigate the forest and when Arne wasn’t the best signer. He could still read Arne’s comments though, the spell still visible despite the fluctuating light from his light spell casting shadows. Ok. Ok. he signed back jokingly. He was distracted though and appreciated the fact that Arne was trying to keep the conversation light-hearted. It was difficult to concentrate much on anything besides the circular thoughts in his head.

And then two figures emerged from the darkness. Cian stopped and stared, his heart sinking into his shoes. It was Laila and Sebastian Haltzer, the latter with his hand on Laila’s back. As they came into the light provided by Cian’s floating bulbs, it was almost a relief to see that Laila didn’t look so great. Maybe she just felt sick and Sebastian was simply helping her out and there was nothing else going on there. A thought that immediately made Cian feel guilty. He shouldn’t be hoping that Laila was sick.

Are you ok? he directed his question at Laila, instead of asking Sebastian, his eyebrows knit together in concern. Laila had been the source of a lot of new feelings in Cian and jealously was now one of them. He wanted to shove Sebastian away from her. What do you mean, the punch? he asked Sebastian, his expression perhaps more accusatory than the other boy deserved given that he was the one helping Laila away from the party.

As the two approached and came into the light of Cian’s spells, Arne realized that there was probably something wrong. Laila didn’t look quite okay and Sebastian looked a bit worried. Before he managed to ask what had happened, Cian began signing to Laila who, Arne noticed, didn’t appear to be sure of what was going on. She looked bleary and tired. He didn’t think he’d ever seen her like that, not even at one of the summer tailgates out in the fields.

“Cian!” Laila exclaimed happily when she saw her friend. He was a site for sore eyes even if he was with Arne Reinhardt. Cian didn’t hate her and she hadn’t ruined her relationship with him yet so that was definitely a plus. “Cian, key-out,” she giggled to herself, still a little bit delirious even though most of whatever her punch had been spiked with had worn off.

Her fingers were so tired, she could kind of understand what Cian was asking her but she was so, so tired. Her brain couldn’t work fast enough with her hands to send signals to them of what to sign. Instead she gave him a thumbs up and patted Seb to indicate that it was because of Seb that she was okay. “Thanks,” she said smiling and stumbling forward to give him a hug. He was so nice to come check on her, just like Seb.

“What did she drink?” Arne asked Sebastian, his brow furrowed. Laila was acting really weird. He knew the kinds of people who threw parties like that. When he was younger he used to run with them—back before he’d realized he was throwing his life away. “She can normally handle her beer.” It was weird to think that for once he was the person in the room who knew Laila Kennedy the best.

“Just punch,” Laila said, lifting her head up from Cian’s shoulder. “There wasn’t supposed to be anything in it, that’s what it said, just punch.”

Arne raised his eyebrow and gave Sebastian a Look. He highly doubted that it was “just punch”.

As Laila seemed happy to see Cian, Sebastian simply made sure she she could bridge the distance between them safely and then took a step back. It was a good thing Sebastian began learning to sign last year, so he would be able to communicate with the Chevalier's.

Was Cian accusing him of spiking Laila's drink? Good, Merlin, no. Sebastian would never, ever do such a thing. The very thought was deplorable and his brow raised in response to Cian's expression. At least it didn't sound like Arne was accusing him of anything.
"I think someone spiked the punch with something, it's making most people happy, flirty and well, crazy. But I also think people are taking things knowingly, and those tents are involved in that." He shuddered, having already dealt with two other girls under such influence. Sebastian nearly kissed one and foolishly kissed the other. He wasn't even under any influences! What was wrong with him? How many people had knowingly or unknowingly consumed whatever it is going around? Moments like this swayed the temptation away from him, thankfully.

"By the time I ran into Laila, she was not well and I tried a few healing spells on her. I'm helping her get back to her dorm, so she can rest. Then I suppose I should come back afterwards, just in case someone else gets sick. This party has been an absolute nightmare and I don't want to be away for too long." He explained to his classmates.

With Arne talking so that his spell materialized writing in the air, Sebastian signing and Laila… mumbling, Cian was having a little bit of trouble following the conversation. He wasn’t sure if Arne’s spell was working correctly with Laila’s unclear speech. Key-out? It was clear, however, that Laila was somewhat out of it. Laila stumbled forward and Cian took half a step back as she put her arms around him, taken aback both by her sudden body weight and by the action itself. In another situation he would have been delighted to have Laila hanging off his shoulders, but she clearly wasn’t herself. Would she ever do this normally?

As Sebastian went into his explanation, Cian watched him incredulously then shifted his gaze to Arne to shoot a questioning look at him. What kind of party was this? Why were there spiked drinks? And what tents? Cian had grown up extremely sheltered, but — especially over the summer hanging out with Arne, Laila and her friends — he didn’t want to be seen as a wet blanket. This was crossing a line, though, right? Something really bad could happen in this situation. The school had already had a problem with love potions and now someone threw a party with spiked punch, apparently.

Sebastian seemed to want to head back to the party to help out. What was Arne’s plan now? Cian looked to his friend, wondering if he still intended to go into the party now that he knew what was going on. Regardless, someone had to take care of Laila and she was currently hanging on Cian. It wasn’t exactly the situation he had hoped for. Since he couldn’t exactly start writing things out for Arne, Cian pointed to himself and Laila and then pointed back to the castle. He could get Laila back, if both Sebastian and Arne were going to continue into the party.

Arne looked from the most likely drugged up Laila to the unfortunate Cian to the tired looking Sebastian and he made a decision. He might not have been one hundred percent sober but anything he'd put into his body that night paled into comparison to the hard alcohol and potions the party goers were likely consuming.

"Yeah, alright," he said, nodding to Cian. He trusted his little man to do the right thing and it seemed like he wasn't needed where that was concerned anymore. He was there for moral support but their planned evening of extravagance had sort of just been short-circuited by those hideous people he'd once called friends.

"I'll come with, Sebastian, we can play white knight together." Though the idea of Arne Reinhardt being anyone's white knight was more than laughable. "Luck, Cian." He nodded his head, tilting it slightly with a one-handed mock salute.

Laila looked up at Cian. "You've got such nice eyes, did you know that?"

Arne rolled his own eyes which, if Laila was paying ANY attention, were the nicest of any out of the four of them's, and turned to head back to the party after casting his word spell on the Muggleborn. "Let's go before Kennedy nauseates me any further with her..." he waved his hand. "Whatever that is."
