Ariel’s return to school was already shaping up to be a roaring success (sarcasm included). She had already sat through an interesting Return Feast where the only thing remotely positive about it had been the addition of two new teachers. She was highly looking forward to the first Ancient Runes class. Not only was the teacher for it cute (really? Did she seriously just think that?), but she had been interested in that sort of thing since she was younger and stargazing with her cousin Clara. Pouring over astronomy books and archeology books, looking at ancient languages and hieroglyphics. It would be nice to finally learn what those symbols she had spent all that time looking at actually meant.

Ariel made it to Potions class a bit early because she really had no idea what to expect from their slightly fruit-looped professor. Perhaps Reko was right and there was a sort of method to her madness, but that didn’t exactly make her a great teacher. Ariel had liked Professor Byron’s style of teaching. He had been very precise, very organized. His lessons had been clear, but challenging. She respected that. Professor O’Reilly on the other hand...her teaching methods seemed a bit too chaotic for a Potions class where precision and attention to detail kept things from blowing up in your face. Quite literally. While Ariel could respect her somewhat “creative” approach to the lessons, she was a little worried about that being taken for granted.

Ariel found herself a seat at one of the open tables and put her messenger bag down on the floor by her stool. After tossing her notebook down on the worktable, prepared for note taking, Ariel rested her chin on her palm and glanced around the room. She caught sight of Daniel staring at her from his seat and after meeting his gaze with a hurt one of her own, Ariel shifted her gaze away from Danny. She did not need to be reminded again of how stupidly she had behaved during the Winter Formal. She chastised herself again for actually thinking he might like her in any way. Cass had tried to help by saying things to her that made sense, but they didn’t make Ariel’s heart hurt any less. Even Nicholas’ rapt attention during her stay with her grandparents couldn’t make the hurt feelings and hollow thoughts go away. Ariel just had to accept that outside her base of friends, she was always going to be the unwanted girl.

Ariel fought to keep from rolling her eyes at the Potions professor as she addressed the class. “Welcome lovelies to the new year! We will start this year with a fun exercise! All of the most famous potions weren’t made on the first try. Even the simplest potion has had hundreds of draft versions before being created. Hundreds of hours of experimenting has created the knowledge you have to know for your T.O.A.Ds. So today, we’re going to experiment. Every table chooses five ingredients, the most creative potion will win something special at the end of class. The sixth and core ingredient of every potion is frog brain. Use your knowledge of other potions and their ingredients to help you! Now, start!” Ariel blew out an irritated breath as she silently went over the list of potions she knew of in her head. “What the hell can I make that would use Frog Brains and be an original thing?” she wondered to herself, not really paying much attention to whomever else was seated at the table she had chosen to sit at. Since her holiday and return to school, Ariel really didn’t feel like participating with others very much. The fact that she was forced to during classes just made the red head more reluctant to do so.

Once they were released to start their potions by the whackadoo they called their teacher, Ariel got up from her stool and made her way over to the ingredients table. She was in the middle of looking at potion ingredients when she realized she was no longer alone. Ariel glanced up from looking at a bottle of powdered Wormwood when she noticed who was standing next to her, practically looking over her shoulder. Ariel let out a bone deep sigh and shook her head. The Holger Twins, Mouthpiece and Blondie. Great. Just what she didn’t need right at that moment. “If you both are looking for someone to annoy, I’m really not in the mood to exchange rivating reparte at the moment,” she commented dryly, continuing to look over the potion ingredients. By any luck, the pair would find someone much more interesting to annoy and she could get back to working on the assignment in peace. Somehow however, she feared that wasn’t going to be the case.

"Us? Come over to annoy you? Nah~ Not solely for the purpose Gingersnap..." Damian replied while actually looking over the redhead's shoulder to see the arrange of ingredients.

The twins came to class with dreaded anxiety boiling slowly in their guts. Potions was the bane of their existence and with every right, they hated it cause it just never seemed to ever go their way; without the proper assistance of course. Near every time the Holger twins relied on their partners to get them through the lessons. That wasn't to say they didn't follow instruction or forget what ingredients did what but the end result just eluded them...

Dominic leaned in to have a closer look at something orange and sticky looking before retreating with a face. He really wasn't looking forward to having to do this task. Understatement of the year.

"No, we're just having a look at what there is to work with. I mean making potions out of nothing...that's just evil...we can't do that without a few explosions. The professor I hope knows that much" the teen took a side step to get out of Ariel's personal space and continue to look at the table. Damian just remained back a little and shrugged.

"You got any ideas to this? We'd love to hear em" he smirked slightly. "Ya know, share few experimental thoughts between the three of us"

Ariel rolled her eyes at Blondie as he feined innocence in his and Mouthpiece’s desire to annoy her. “Yeah..I'll bet,” she mumbled to herself, ignoring the fact that he and his brother were practically reading over her shoulder. Ariel couldn't help shrugging when he asked if she had anything in mind as far as the potion went for class. Ariel had a few ideas, but she wasn't entirely sure of them just yet.

“I was sort of thinking of creating a giant stink bomb,” she told Nic, not really looking at him as she read the potion labels. Ahe knew it wasn't really nice not to look at him while she spoke to him, but given her experiences with the species known as “Males” lately, Ariel wasn't in the mood to be very nice to many of them. The only male she could stand to be around without wanting to hex him was Reko.

Nicholas, Daniel and just about every other male on the face of the planet, (other than her best friend) were in serious danger of her possibly removing body parts from their persons. The Holger boys might be an exception depending on what they said or did around her during the lesson. So far they hadn't done anything to be hexed over. YET.

“I was also kicking around the idea of a combination sleeping draught/stink bomb combo,” she told the blonde boy behind her. “Then again...creating a potion that causes sleepwalking could be interesting,” she mused aloud. Given her limited potion lesson with the previous Potions Master, Ariel felt pretty confident she could make any of her ideas work for their particular lesson. “Which one sounds like more fun to you two?” She asked Nic, putting down the powdered wormwood.

The boys had to hand it to the girl; she was creative in her ideas and if past experiences were to go by; especially their own, creative tended to be the best. Damian looked to his brother for a moment, the two having a silence conversation with their eyes before an agreement seemed to form itself. Why not?

"Actually both sound rather great" Nic straightened up and looked to the redhead. If they were going to get along this lesson and survive, planning, compromise and some sort of peace was to be made. "Creating the combination potion does sound challenging though. You sure it's possible?" he continued out of curiosity more than hesitance. Damian for his part had moved a step back to give Ariel a little space and keep to his word; they weren't there to bother her.

"We'll agree to either really" he cut in after his brother. "So long as you're willing to take us as partners for the job" Damian hooked an arm round his twins neck and gave the biggest grin he could produce. There were some doubts it would have any effect on her decision making.

"Look, we'll try anything. Heck, half this stuff looks questionable to be messed with to me anyway" Nic said while lightly shoving his brother aside. "Willing to call a truce for a lesson? Especially one that could get us hurt if we mess around. Potions isn't our...thing. And we'd appreciate the help to pass" Dominic offered the girl his hand.

Handshake was still the strongest agreement custom the twins knew and it was done all over the world still...she'd take it, right? Damian couldn't handle the tension!!!

Ariel couldn't help the tiny grin that crossed her lips at Blondie’s admission on their potions abilities. Ariel snorted softly. “Given what I know about the two of you, that actually doesn't surprise me,” she told him teasingly. Ariel glanced down at Dom’s outstretched hand and the look on Nic’s face as she contemplated his request for a truce between them. She had to admit it would be far easier to work with the pair should they call a truce then if they didn't. “Deal,” she told the pair, shaking Dom’s hand to solidify their agreement.

After taking back her hand from Dom, Ariel smirked. “You two boys just happen to be in luck since I am actually pretty great at potions,” she told the pair, turning back to look over the potion ingredients. She tried not to sound too smug about her claim. Between her and Reko, she was fairly certain they carried the best marks in the class for their year. Ariel was almost certain that if she hadn't been more warrior-ish and more studious, she and Reko would have probably ended up in the same house. Ariel was who she was and she was actually happy with her house selection.

Ariel found herself nodding at Nic’s question about the combo potion. “It is possible actually, but it would be difficult to do since I don't see the last ingredient we would need to even try it,” she told him, picking up a few more potion bottles to see their labels. “Besides, Professor Crackpot says we're only allowed to choose 5 other ingredients besides the Frog's Brains and a potion like that would require at least 8 ingredients altogether,” Ariel shrugged. “I'm leaning more towards the Sleepwalking potion myself,” she told them, picking the powdered Wormwood back up.

“We pull that one off and we can basically turn someone into a living zombie,” she chuckled. “Ya know...minus the whole dead body and rotted flesh thing.” Ariel wrinkled her nose at the idea of a typical zombie. After instructing the twins on the ingredients needed to make their potion, Ariel led the way back to their worktable. After setting everything up as needed, Ariel gave the twins instructions on how to prep each item before they attempted putting their chosen potion together.

Ok! This was good! They were going to get through this potions task WITHOUT any problems! The twins got this..maybe. Well it mostly depended on their redhead team leader to their final success rate but Damian had confidence they'd pull through...somehow.

"So we're already limited to our potion options by the number of ingredients?" he grumbled looking annoyed. That wasn't fair. Narrowing the scope for a student's creative mind all because of a slight numbers issue. The blonde shrugged it off mostly but still tried to think up something in his limited mental list of potions. His face was showing the difficult task.

Dominic was smiling softly; Ariel agreeing to work together was the first good part of their whole lesson. Nic just rolled his eyes at his twins actions as a whole; choose the ingredients, start brewing, come out in one piece.

"If you think we can make it properly; Frog brains included, then we should go for that. What others do you need?" His blue eyes caught her taking one of the needed bottles while he reached for another. The entire list wasn't engraved in his memory but one or two the teen could remember.

"Zombies? We're going to make zombies? You sure a magical school could survive that?" Damian had only hurt the end of the rotting flesh bit but it still sounded interesting. Doing his part in helping select and carry the ingredients, Damian was the one most keen to get started soon as their table was set. He was focused, determined and ready to do whatever instructed.

Dominic couldn't be more proud of his brother. Working side by side, the twin boys started cutting, slicing and measuring everything. Class was to be passed!!

“So we're already limited to our potion options by the number of ingredients?" Damian(?)grumbled, looking annoyed. Ariel shrugged. “Yep...fun huh?” She quipped back, looking over a few more jars before grabbing a few of the ones they need.

"If you think we can make it properly; Frog brains included, then we should go for that. What others do you need?" Ariel watched the boy in front of her grab another one of the bottles they would need while she held the others. “These should all do nicely,” she grinned at him, leading the way back to their work table.

"Zombies? We're going to make zombies? You sure a magical school could survive that?" Ariel chuckled as Mouthpiece piped in, leaving her to believe that Nic was the one who had grumbled. Then again, that could have also been Mouthpiece that had grumbled...at the moment she didn't care which was which. “In a manner of speaking Damian….Yes. Yes we are,” she confirmed for him. “Well, since the “Zombies” we'll be making aren't actually Zombies, I think the school will survive just fine,” she told him, still chuckling.

Ariel placed the ingredients on the table and began giving thr twins instructions. Clear, consice instructions. “Ian...take that bottle of powdered Wormwood and measure out TWO table spoons and add those to the pot first,” she told him. “Stir them three times clockwise over the flame until it turns a dark blue” she instructed. “Nic...take those mistletoe berries and crush three of them before adding them to the dark blue wormwood in the pot,” she told Nic. “Stir them in Counterclockwise, slowly adding water as you stir. Stop adding the water once you can no longer fully see the contents clearly,” she told him.

“Keep stirring counterclockwise until the mixture turns a light blue. Once it does that, leave it to boil for about five minutes. We'll put the next ingredient in at that point,” she told him. She then instructed Ian on the next ingredient while Nic worked on the instructions she already gave him.

Damian had never seen a redhead take charge like Ariel did; it was both awesome and scary. She clearly knew what she was talking about, knew how to make it happen and damned to Merlin's grave and back he was not going to cross her today.

"Two table spoons, Wormwood, pot" Damian repeated before giving a salute. "Yes ma'am" there was no way about it, Ian had to somehow push the boundaries and try to get a little humour into their situation. He didn't hesitate however at doing the exact job he'd been assigned. With a steady hand and keen eye the blonde measured out EXACTLY two table spoons of the powder and put them in first. Counting under his breath as his hand moved the stirrer round clockwise three times...low and behold. It turned blue. "Huh that's cool"

Dominic caught onto their roles almost as quickly as Ariel did at listing their jobs. While his twin was busy measuring, Nic got onto the crushing. Normally this sorta thing would be on Damian's list but the teen practically pulverized the berries into mush (and rather joyfully too). He thought ahead to grab the jug of water and stand at Ian's side to add in mixture. The berries first while the other boy started going the other way in his stirring, then the water at a calm controlled rate. It went without saying the boys could work in tandem together without so much as a word nor nudge on how the dynamic needed to be.

It was just there.

Dominic stepped away after seeing the mush be taken up by the liquid of the concoction. Damian for his part kept the constant pace circles, watching carefully for the colour change again. Nodding his head when it did so and putting the tool aside Ian returned his attention back to Ariel and the next set of instructions.
Despite the twins hating this particular class and topic in general, it might not turn out so bad. This time round.

Ariel chuckled slightly at the salute Damian gave her before getting to work like she had instructed him to, shaking her head at the goofball. In the spirit of the moment, she silently saluted him back before getting to work prepping the rest of their stuff. Ariel watched the twins as they got to work, following her instructions to the letter. It was a good thing too...especially since four of their classmates already had potions blow up in their faces. She was not about to let that happen with theirs.

Ariel watched as Dominic mashed up the mistletoe berries as instructed and added them to the cauldron Ian was currently stirring. She chuckled a bit when Nic(?)commented on the contents on the pot changing color like she said it would. Ariel wasn't sure which of them it was that said it at the time since her attention was currently on mincing up lavender sprigs. She had a few minutes to kill getting potion stuff ready since their concoction had to boil for about five minutes before the next ingredient went in.

It had to be precisely timed too, otherwise the whole thing would be a bust. Ariel stuck the minced lavender in a small cup and passed it to Ian. “Take that and pour it SLOWLY into the boiling liquid, stirring CLOCKWISE as you do it,” she instructed Blondie. “Once it turns Pink, stop stirring. Let it boil for another five minutes until that sucker is soo pink it reminds you of a neon highlighter,” she told him. “Once its that color then we can remove it from the fire to add the final two ingredients. Those have to go in as the thing is cooling. We do it before then and we'll wind up looking like those two,” she pointed over towards Caleb and Buffy for effect. “Only we'll be screaming from the blinding pain.”

Damian took the ingredient and blinked at the VERY clear given instructions. Either the redhead still thought them incompetent (as they did themselves) or she was still kinda stressed from some sort of outside influence. And here the twins were starting to think their awesome presence was putting Ariel at ease.
Nodding before he SLOWLY added the lavender into the mix, Ian took the extra care to grab the mixer and go CLOCKWISE.

Dominic for his part was standing aside trying hard not to smirk or snicker at the two. He wasn't laughing at them per say but the way Ariel was so stern and Ian's response of over focus had his sides aching. The younger girl made a fair point though; with the already growing number of explosions happening in their class Nic and Ian especially didn't want to be added to that statistic. 'Screaming from blinding pain'? No way in Merlin's name thank you.

"Bro, that's pink enough to me" he stepped in to make sure the other teen pulled the mixer out. The two identical boys stood there looking into the cauldron for the next five minutes. They had nothing against the colour, or any in fact but the longer it boiled away the more extreme it got. The liquid reminded them of perhaps the brightest street light they'd ever seen. It was somewhere in west Asia maybe? Nic wasn't fully sure but those muggles could go pretty big in their neons. Damian just tried not to get to blinded.

"Ok so five minutes boiling...Nic help me out here" Ian spoke or more mumbled while turning off the fire underneath before the twins in perfect sync took hold of the pot and gently placed it on the counter top without so much as causing a ripple. "Let it cool...ah how do we know when to add them exactly?" Two sets of blue eyes glanced at each other before focusing on the girl; no explosions today please. The twins were doing so well for a single potions lesson it was amazing!! No failure now!!

Ariel tried not to smirk at the look Mouthpiece was giving her as she gave him the clear instructions for their potion while handing him the lavender she had prepared. Despite her best efforts to be blah, being around the two of them was actually helping her somewhat. Not much, but somewhat. “I don't say any of it to be mean Mouthpiece,” she told him, still slightly amused. “Believe it or not, I don't think you two are stupid. Its just that we've chosen to make a very precise potion, (which may or may not work despite our best efforts) and I'd like not to wear it if at all possible,” she assured the blonde boy.

Ariel caught sight of Blondie out of the corner of her eye, trying not to smirk at his brother being given strict instructions by her for their potion. Not wanting him to feel left out of everything, Ariel went to give him another instruction as she prepped the final two ingredients. She was a little surprised when he beat her to it, stepping in on his own. "Bro, that's pink enough to me" Blondie stepped in, making sure Mouthpiece quit stirring the boiling concoction. Ariel leaned over really quick to make sure for herself before leaving the twins to their appointed task. She nearly laughed watching their identical faces looking over their cauldron as it boiled.

"Ok so five minutes boiling...Nic help me out here" Ian spoke to his brother as he turned off the fire from underneath the cauldron. Ariel eyed the two boys silently as they moved it in perfect sync to the tabletop without soo much as causing a ripple in the lquid. "Let it cool...ah how do we know when to add them exactly?" One of the twins asked her as she finished cutting up the frog's brain. “I'm actually very glad you asked that question,” Ariel told them, her own blue eyes coming to rest on the twins. Picking up the powdered unicorn horn, Ariel moved closer to the cooling cauldron.
“Okay….ya see how the mix is starting to mellow in color,” she pointed out to the twins, pointing at the mixture inside the cauldron. “We know to add the next ingredient when that neon pink color mellows down to a pale-ish pink sort of color,” she told them, watching their potion shade drop in intensity. “Once it reaches the right shade, then we add in a PINCH of the powdered Unicorn Horn. Anymore than that and we run the risk of it blowing up in our faces,” she told the twins, dropping in the the pinch of horn to the mix.
Ariel picked up the mixer and began stiring in the powdered Unicorn Horn, making sure to stir very slowly. “After we stir the powdered stuff in all the way, then we have to wait for the mixture to turn a bluish-green color,” she told them, mixing in the last of the powder. “Once it turns that color, we can add in the frog's brain. Fair warning though….the frog's brain might cause a small reaction when its added to the mixture so don't freak when it happens okay,” she said to the pair, pulling the mixer out of the potion.
Ariel waited with the twins as their potion began changing color again. Once it was the correct-ish shade, Ariel asked Blondie for the final ingredient. “Blondie….hand me that frog's brain woulda please,” she asked him, her hand out and ready. Ariel took the final ingredient from Nic, mumbling “Thank you” as she did so and got ready to add it to their potion. “You guys might want to step back just a little bit,” she told them, giving them a few seconds to comply before dropping in the frog's brain.
Ariel wasn't surprised to see a small puff of smoke emerge from the cauldron as she mixed in the last ingredient. Ariel's eyes watered slightly from the smoke and she coughed a little as it made its way near her nose, but it wasn't as big of a reaction as she had been expecting. Maybe that was a good thing. “Mouthpiece….you wanna grab me one of those empty vials so we can bottle this sucker up really quick?” She asked Ian, pulling the mixer out of the potion again. “Blondie...you wanna make a label for it so we can hand it in to Professor Crackpot?” She asked the other twin, keeping a close eye on their finished product.
Maybe it would do what they intended for it to do….maybe it wouldn't. Without testing it however, Ariel really had no way to know, but at least they finished their potion without it exploding on them. That was a definite plus.

Never again would Damian ever doubt the redhead girl's ability when it came to concocting potions of such caliber. Cause it was both astounding and somewhat scary...the twins weren't idiots in terms of following instructions but the smaller details always went over their heads. Ariel's little note of the colour change when it cooled wouldn't have sunk into Ian's head in a million years of doing this...

"Wow" he said watching in silence as she added the next ingredient. The blonde duo were sure to keep their distance over the constant words of 'blowing up' and/or 'explosion' but otherwise were almost hovering near their partner to examine her actions.

Nic was nodding subconsciously to her instructions, even if they had nothing to do or assist with at the time, he was astutely paying attention. The twins had their exams next year and by the way they were going with Potions before Ariel; failure was an easy assumption.

"Bluish-green colour? Kinda like that" Dominic said pointing into the pot as indeed the liquid started changing after the powder was completely mixed in. The teen then did as requested and handed over the frog brains; their very assignment of the class and hopefully not the very thing that would lead to chaos. Blue eyes looked at it with mild disgust. Both blondes took a decent step away while Ariel put in their final ingredient. They weren't sure how it was going to go but better safe than sorry right?...

Damian cringed ready for the sounding explosive pop...but nothing came. They'd done it! Successful complete potion without injury or disaster!! Yes! Maybe the Holger boys weren't cursed in potions!

"Aye aye Gingersnap!" he grinned grabbing three small vials ready for this very purpose. Ian handed them one by one to his brother for a quick labeling whom then handed them to Ariel to be filled up with the potion. He was grinning like an idiot at seeing their work complete and possible pass for the subject they hated most.

"Thanks for the help Ariel" Dominic spoke up with a smile. "We would've been in the wing no doubt without you" Ian was quick to agree.
