Harper was excited for Herbology. This wasn’t because her best friend’s father taught the class, someone that Harper knew very well after years of spending time at Thomas’s house or because she enjoyed Herbology (she enjoyed the class, but had no talent for the subject) but because they were going to be spending the class outside. As much as she loved the passion of Professor Watson and Herbology, the greenhouses had a really weird smell because of all the various plants, fertilizers, and whatever else was in there and any time that they could spend their lesson outside was a win for Harper.

She listened to what it was that they were doing that day and then at the list of plants that they were supposed to go find. She could identify some plants but not all of the ones listed. She wasn’t even sure if she could pronounce them very well. But, it was a type of fun game and Harper was more than willing to play it even if she didn’t find all of them. It was the effort that counted. Now she just had to figure out someone to work with.

Harper thought of Thomas first for obvious reasons, but she couldn’t find him so she thought he had already paired up with someone and was in the forest. Her blue eyes landed on a familiar face and that floppy feeling in her stomach happened. This week had been very strange because first she was thinking about him and then she was thinking about Foxworth Lexington. Even now, she still felt this flutter in her chest when she thought of the third year and she didn’t understand why. He seemed like a nice person, but Harper didn’t know him so she didn’t understand the weird cloudy feeling in her head whenever he came to mind.

Shaking it off now, Harper approached Eoin hesitantly. He had helped her with her Transfiguration and hadn’t felt horrified by her jumbled sign language skills. She really wanted to keep working with him but her week was foggy and she wasn’t sure if she had answered that note he sent her or not. Harper lightly tapped Eoin’s shoulder to get his attention and waved to him with a polite smile. She could feel her cheeks grow warm and hoped that the cold air could cover the blush for her. ”Hi Eoin.” Harper spoke and signed to him. ”Work with me?” Her broken sign asked though she verbally asked correctly.

Eoin had an interesting week, not sure what to make of his feeling of sadness from not talking to Harper or his joy that he had already made a new friend. Sorin made him feel better and even made a silent giggle or two come out of him while he was trying to make him feel better. That ended well, but he still had not heard from Harper, he could not help but wonder what she has been up to.

It was exciting that professor Watson let them be outside and to let them explore a little bit. It was a nice change of pace to get some fresh air in his lungs. When teach let them go and explore, Eoin gathered his belongs and prepared himself to start exploring all the different plants alone when he felt someone tap him on the shoulder to get his attention. COnfused as to who would want to talk to him, he turned around and saw the familiar dark curls and blue eyes looking at him and his mind turned absolutely giddy, every worry he had flying away in the wind. He watched a polite smile appear on her face and he could not help but smile back; anytime she smiled it was almost like it was a contagious wonderful disease that spread to his face back and left an unfamiliar feeling of joy to him, he appreciated nothing else as much as her friendship.

Eoin nodded and grinned when she asked if he would work with her. He was not used to having a partner in a school project so he hoped he did not steal all the work from her. When they approached the first plant, he studied it for a moment before signing to her. what do you think this is? He looked to his list hoping there would be some kind of clue as to what the green and leafy plant before them was.

Harper was so worried that Eoin was upset with her for ignoring him for the whole week. She hadn’t meant to. She really had no idea why she had been so invested in Foxworth, but she hoped that Eoin would forgive her for any sort of wrongdoing he might have felt towards her. She smiled at him when he turned though she waited with trepidation that he was going to reject her request or show some sign of anger or disgust at seeing her.

Instead though, he smiled. It was bright and happy and the exact opposite as to what she was expecting. He was happy to see her. His sudden joy relieved any tension that she over everything and her body relaxed. Her smile widened into something more genuine and matched the glee that he seemed to have. She was definitely blushing with how brightly he was smiling at her. He was so different than how she used to see him in classes. Before he seemed sad and distant but after spending time with him, he was always smiling and helpful. Harper was so glad she was getting a chance to know him.

As they walked, Harper felt so light as she walked next to Eoin. She giggled quietly to herself and pretended like they were walking in the forest alone together almost like a date but when he started to ask about a plant, Harper dropped the thought and tried to get serious. ”Too fast.” pointing to his hands with a smile so that he knew she wasn’t upset or anything, but she had understood him enough to at least know he was questioning the plant in front of them.

She looked carefully at the plant before looking at her list with a slight frown on her face as she read them over. “Maybe V-A-L-E-R-I-A?” She suggested, spelling of the plant name since she had no idea what the sign for it would be.

Eoin really liked hanging out with Harper, and teaching her stuff and he wondered if she would be into the same things as him. He all of a sudden had the sudden urge to show her all his books and hope that she might have an interest in some of them. Particularly some of his books about random things. Noah told him once that she liked superheros and he just happen to have a few books about superheros.

Harper signed that he was going too fast for her and he immediately felt bad, so he made sure to write down everything before he signed it to her like he usually does. He was getting ahead of himself and forgot to take into consideration that she was still learning. Sorry, he signed with an embarrassed face.

He watched her signing out some letters and he realized she was trying to suggest what the plant may be. V A L E R I A, right Valeria. He nodded in response, referring to the list and checked it off. He assumed they were not supposed to harvest the plant since it was a pretty famously known.

Before they moved on to the next plant, Eoin quickly jotted down to Harper, would you maybe want to look at my books with me sometime? I have some on superheros and I know you like stuff about them. They kept walking as he showed her what he wrote and really hoped that she would say yes to hangout with him more and outside of a class assignment.

They came across their next plant and it was labeled to harvest it. It was a sapling to a tree that had small green leaves on it. Eoin has read about it before and it looked familiar to him but he was blanking on the name of it at the moment. He knew if he looked at the list he would see it on there and recognize it, but he wanted to give Harper the opportunity to guess it if she knew it.

His embarrassed face was so adorable and Harper just wanted to hug him, but instead she quickly waved off his apology and signed ”It’s okay!” to him. She understood that it was his natural language so talking fast for him would be a given. She was just slow and not smart enough to understand sign language yet. She just didn’t want to get lost in what he was signing and then not be able to communicate with him over it. He wasn’t flawed, just she was. Harper picked part of the plant and stuck it in the basket. Since it wasn’t one of the special magical plants, they didn’t have to harvest it so she didn’t take as much care of picking it as she would have if they needed to harvest it.

Feeling satisfied that they had at least one plant taken care of, Harper tucked her pen behind her ear, getting lost with the dark curls of her hair. She looked down at the note he was handing to her and her eyes lit up at the offer. With a bright smile she nodded in his direction. “I would love to.” she stated with her broken sign, but hopefully he understood her anyway. Eoin wanted to spend time with her, she thought she was going to throw up her stomach was flopping around so much with happiness. It also made her a little nervous. Working with him when he was helping her had been nerve-wracking but what if they hung out to have fun and he didn’t have fun with her? He’d never want to spend time with her ever again!

She didn’t want to think about that right now. She was already so confused about everything that thinking more into it would only make her head spin. Harper just wanted to enjoy the lesson with Eoin. “Maybe we can share books?” She asked, though her hands merely signed ‘share’ and ‘books’ because those were the only words that she knew.

“Oh! Is this a Wiggentree?” She asked before realizing that she hadn’t signed. She had no idea how to sign this, so instead she fished for her pen, but got it tangled in her hair by accident. “Owwww” She hissed as she tugged it free. Pen in hand, she jotted down, “Is this a Wiggentree?”

Eoin smiled brightly when she agreed to hang out with him outside of classes, and he got to show off his books while he was at it. Chloe and Cian were right it seemed, it was great to have friends! Perhaps he really should be more approachable towards people if it ends with him having friends as great as Harper.

Harper signed only share and books and he was smart enough to put two and two together. He nodded enthusiastically in response excited at the prospect of being able to look at new books, plus he got to share his stuff so it was like passing on his knowledge.

When Harper guessed what he knew he was pretty proud that someone else knew what it was. He wrote down That's what I was going to say too. He smiled and crouched down to begin to start harvesting. He tried to be gentle with the plant considering it was still super young. He knew you had to take special care since it's rare but he hope he does a good job. Pausing for a moment, he quickly wrote down to Harper, I'm not very good with this kind of stuff, I've never harvested a plant before. He shrugged as if saying oh well. But, he continued pushing the dirt away trying to salvage the roots at the bottom.

Harper really wanted to work on her signing because she knew it was a struggle for him and for her to communicate with one another when she was so terrible at it. She was trying though, but it was so hard for her to remember the signs for some words and to figure out how the sentences went because they weren’t the same as normal sentences. She was determined though because she wanted to be Eoin’s friend. She was going to ask her parents if she could get lessons over the summer so that when she saw Eoin next year, she could have better conversations with him and make him really happy.

She grinned at him when he wrote that he was thinking the same thing that she was. At least they were on the same page with this assignment. Harper was not very good with plants. She wasn’t bad. She just wasn’t Thomas level good with two parents who lived in the plant world. Being able to identify them (hopefully) correctly and agree with it with another person made her feel like they were winning already and great partners.

Dropping to the ground beside him, Harper watched as Eoin began the careful process of harvesting the little tree. ”It’s okay. You’re doing great.” She said and signed in her broken words. Okay and Great were the best words that she was able to give in that sentence. Harper wrote down on his paper I’ll help you. She started to help with getting rid of the dirt and being careful to not pull on any of the roots until it seemed as though they had cleared the area around the sapling and could pull it from the ground unharmed. “Yay!” Harper cheered. “We did it!”
