Ryder looked around at all the wonderful food, everything seemed to be so mouthwateringly good and he felt a small pang of jealousy towards the students, there was nothing much he wouldn't do to be able to eat again. He could remember his own sorting, but just barely, considering how long ago it was and how things had changed for him. He'd felt really nervous, but excited at the same time, to the point that he was almost hyperactive.
But now every year just meant that he would have to watch and standby, while everyone else got to move on with their lives and could basically do whatever they wanted. Just because he was dead didn't mean that he didn't have his own dreams and ambitions. He'd been thinking about it for a while, although he thought that it was probably impossible, but could ghosts do exams? Obviously, the non-magical kind, like the ones muggles do, though he did consider these high hopes.
"Really isn't that talent show thing a bit limiting for ghosts?" It was a joke, and Ryder tried to hold in his laughter, most of the time being serious was hard for him. Being dead had done one good thing for him, he'd become more confident. Plus, he kind of liked heckling.

(Figured I'd backtrack to Cy at the very start of the school year just after sorting )
After hearing about Ilvermorny from his mom, and then from his big sister, Cy had felt that he would be prepared for it all. Once he arrived, though, it seemed like a dream. Here was this awesome castle with magic all around it and everyone was magical, and he would be learning magic. It didn't seem real. And then when he was told to stand in the middle of the gordion knot thing, he couldn't wait to find out which house would take him.
For a few seconds, he'd thought that nothing would happen. Many concerns began to race through the boy's head and he wondered what would happen if none of them wanted him, and how would he ever get through school and achieve his life goals? And then to his relief, and excitement, the Thunderbird house had chosen him. That sounded like the coolest house! He had watched in fascination and happiness as the statue of the bird started flapping its wings. That was awesome.
Now, it was time for food. Cy had no problem with that! He listened, or at least tried to pay attention, through the welcome speech. Adults sure do like to talk and make announcements, don't they? The young boy could hear his stomach growling. Then finally the speech was over and the feast could begin. Just as he was beginning to pile his plate up with delicious looking food, the boy caught sight of a rather startling thing. Was that kid transparent? His eyes widened at the sight of a ghost, though he wasn't quite sure what he was seeing. He'd never seen a ghost before, and would have previously told anyone that ghosts weren't real.
