Potions always seemed like it would be a really cool class. However, because he was still a first year, it seemed everything was required to be desperately boring. This lesson was apparently no exception. Eric stared enviously at the second years, who would at least get to brew a potion and whose homework had been to collect flubber worm mucus. That would actually be fun, as apposed to writing an essay about cauldrons. Eric fished around in his bag for said essay, pulling it out and then smoothing the wrinkles that had developed after he shoved it in his bag.

After exceeding amounts of research and reading, I think the best cauldron is a copper cauldron. It’s one of the cheaper metals to make a cauldron out of but it still works really well. Pewter cauldrons don’t perform as well as copper ones, but anything fancier than a copper cauldron is more expensive than it’s worth. The best bang for your buck is definitely a copper cauldron.

In reality, Eric had not done ‘exceeding amounts of research and reading’. He had written his essay in the middle of the night the previous night. He had simply picked copper because that was the kind of cauldron they were required to get, so it must be a good one. It seemed like a safe bet.

The rest of that day’s assignment wasn’t much better. All they got to do was stare at vials? Eric heaved a sigh when his vials landed on his desk. And a twenty-inch essay? Eric laid his head on his desk, groaning. When he raised it again, he looked around for a partner to work with. At least then it would be somewhat more fun.

“Rosie. Hey, Rosie!” He poked her to get her attention. “Do you want to work together? This is going to be so boring.”

Rosemary stared at Professor O’Reilly with an open mouth. There was homework? How could she have been missed it? But then she remembered that during the last lesson, she was playing around with her potion way too much. The witch had tried to make it a pink potion – completely ignoring the assignment during class – yet only managed to get frizzy hair because of the smoke. She had totally missed the moment when the crazy lady – if she had to believe older students – gave them homework. The girl looked around her, seeing her fellow classmates handing in their essays. Was she screwed? Probably not. Well, hopefully not. If her parents got to know that she didn’t make her homework – especially for potions – they would tell the school’s staff to make her clean the floors of the kitchen. Rosie didn’t want to do that.

A familiar voice and some poking caught her attention. She turned her face towards Eric, her facial expression of a sheep. Besides being insecure about the homework, she felt a bit down and speechless that they had to do something boring. The professor was crazy, but fun, especially in the curious, impulsive eyes of the Korean girl. However, this lesson they had to stare at vials. Of all things, they had to look at vials. She wanted to brew and make colorful potions, not look at vials. Besides, the ones on her tables were a lot uglier than those on the tables of others. “Yeah sure, indeed boring,” she agreed to Eric statement looking around her for a way to escape. “Can’t we like secretly brew something.” She noticed that the old woman had her attention mostly focused on the second years – who were actually allowed to brew. Besides their desk was at the end of the row. “I don’t want to write an essay,” she pouted, looking at Eric with hopeful eyes. As a known troublemaker – getting detention from the creepy librarian within the first month at school – she expected the boy to have some kind of plan to make the lesson a bit of fun.

Fortunately, Rosie agreed with his assessment that the lesson was far too boring. Getting stuck partnered with someone who actually wanted to do the lesson well was always the worst. He got along just fine by barely paying attention and doing his work at the last minute. His grades were passing and that's all that mattered to him. He didn’t want to be pushed to do better. Why try hard when he didn’t actually need to? It was just wasted effort, as he saw it.

Eric picked up a skinny vile forlornly. He then stuck his index finger in it and waved the elongated finger at Rosie as if chastising her. “Me, secretly brew a potion? How dare you insinuate I wouldn’t follow directions!” His stern expression immediately broke into a grin. He couldn’t keep that ridiculous joke up for long.

“What potion do you have in mind, Ms. Moon?” He glanced over at Professor O’Reilly, wondering when she would circle over to check on the first years. Could they get away with brewing a potion? “Maybe we can sliiiide over to the second year side and she won’t notice?” The professor seemed rather nuts, but was she nuts enough to forget which of her students were in which year?

Rosemary chuckled as she heard Eric’s response. What he said was almost out of character. She knew he was joking. The boy loved making trouble and doing things that are the opposite of boring. Well, that was the impression that the girl had on him. “Glad that we are thinking alike,” she said after she saw the grin on his face. Rosie looked around and saw that the professor was still not paying attention. She was pouting, thinking about the possibilities. She also spotted some ingredients on bookcases

Let’s make Swelling Solution. I spotted some bat spleens, dried nettles and puffer-fish eyes,” the witch mumbled, looking at the other side of the classroom. How would they get there to get the appropriate ingredients? At that moment, Eric proposed a lovely idea. It was one of the most wonderful ideas she had ever heard. “I think it could work,” she murmured. Her face was filled with excitement. “I’m pretty tall.” At 5’0”, the Thunderbird was taller than most first years, including Eric. If they were quick enough, they could pose as hardworking second years.

Let’s go,” she said before rolling onto the ground from her seat. The girl quickly crawled over the floor to go to an empty table with a cauldron. She didn’t hear the voice of the crazy professor. When she thought she was safe, she stood up and gave Eric a gesture to also come. Professor O’Reilly was at the moment looking inside the cauldron of a second year.

“Swelling Solution, good one!” Eric didn’t think it would be too difficult and it would be a fun one to try out. Good for pranks, too, if they managed to get it out of the classroom. Rosie had even scoped out the necessary ingredients already, making it even more likely that they would get away with it. Rosie did look a bit more like a second year, since, as she said, she was taller. It was too bad he didn’t have more control over his ability and could make himself look older. Nevertheless, he did his best and tried to make his face look a little narrower. He wasn’t sure if that would help, but it was worth a try.

Eric had to cover his mouth to keep from laughing as Rosie rolled onto the ground and crawled across the floor. Before following, he tried to pull the vial off his finger, but it was stuck. He struggled for a few moments until there was a quiet pop and his finger was finally liberated. The other vials were all still on their table. Thinking it might look suspicious if the professor saw an empty table with vials, Eric quickly filled his robe pockets with the vials.

Rosie was now gesturing for him to follow. A glance at the professor revealed that she was preoccupied with a second year’s potion. Carefully, Eric creeped down onto the ground and started crawling toward Rosie. A student seated nearby noticed his progress and Eric raised a finger to his lips, hoping to keep them quiet. Eventually, he managed to slip into the seat next to Rosie. He didn’t think Professor O’Reilly had noticed and hopefully no one was about to rat them out.

Eric agreed to do a swelling solution, which excited Rosemary. They might use it in the future to play a prank on their friends. She had never done a prank, but she imagined her classmate to be good at it. The boy even could barely hold his laughter while seeing her roll onto the ground and go to the other side of the classroom. To be honest, Rosie could sometimes be quite hilarious. She even surprised herself from time to time. However, Eric shouldn’t laugh, otherwise, their cover would be blown. It seemed to take the boy forever to go to her side of the classroom. His finger was even stuck in one of the vials. It made her giggle for a bit, before noticing that Eric put the other vials in his robe before creeping towards her table.

Great,” she smiled, giving the boy a high five. Rosie proceeded to go to the shelf and pick the ingredients for a swelling solution. Like a stealthy spy, she quickly gathered bat spleens, dried nettles, and puffer-fish eyes before returning to her seat. She jumped a little bit out of excitement. “Are you ready?” the Thunderbird asked him with a mischievous smile. “Can you prepare the cauldron? I will prepare the dried nettles and puffer fish eyes!” Rosie remembered the recipe from the book quite well. Surprisingly, potions were one of her better subjects besides Herbology. The girl put 2 scoops of dried nettles and three puffer-fish eyes into the small mortar, starting to crush it as her eyes stayed on Professor O’Reilly, hoping that she wouldn’t notice them.

Eric gleefully returned Rosie’s high five, then glanced around the room again hoping the noise hadn’t caught the wrong person’s attention. Really, they should be praised for wanting to push their boundaries and do something more difficult than was assigned. There, that was great reasoning for rule breaking. Everyone was telling him to try harder, so really they should be glad that he wanted to make a potion instead of write about vials. Totally perfectly sound reasoning there. No problem.

“Got it,” he said when Rosie suggested he prepare the cauldron while she prepped the ingredients. Her stealthy grabbing of them was pretty impressive. So far at least no one seemed to have caught on to what they were doing. Or if they had, weren’t prepared to tattle on them. Whatever, detention would be worth it. Eric was more concerned about the instant gratification that would come with working on the potion instead of doing what they were supposed to be doing. Once the cauldron was set up, he also set aside the necessarily amount of water they would need once the first ingredients were ready to add to the cauldron. Typically, he ended up doing everything rather haphazardly when making a potion. Ironically, he was being a lot more meticulous with this one.

The high five made Rosie feel even more excited about their plan. Besides, the swelling solution seemed easy and fun to make. It was a good bonding experience for her and Eric. To be honest, they were being excellent students. They just wanted more challenge in their class assignments. If you would ask her, they were being the perfect students. Their teamwork went well. Rosemary did the ingredients and Eric prepared the cauldron to brew the ultimate prank potion.

The dark-haired girl measured the crushed mix that she had prepared with the dried nettles and puffer-fish eyes. She put two measures of the powder in the cauldron, adding two tablespoons of water with it. “Medium heat, ten minutes!” she instructed, remembering the recipe as the swelling solution sounded quite interesting. “She still isn’t onto to us, right?” Rosie sneaked in a glance to the ginger professor. She did seem too busy to have pay attention to them. The girl observed the young wizard a bit. He was a few inches shorter, which made her remember something. “You’re a Metamorphmagus, right?” she tilted her head a bit, her eyes filled with curiosity. “Can you control your height or not?” She never learned the limitations of being a Metamorphmagus, so it would be interesting to know.

At Rosie’s question, Eric chanced another peak at the professor. “I don’t think so,” he said under his breath. Within the group of second year students working on their potion, they didn’t stand out too much. If nothing went wrong, he figured there would be no reason for the professor to come over and check on them. There always seemed to be a group or two that was taking up most of the attention in potions anyway, with weird colored smoke or a noxious smell emanating from their cauldron. Eric hoped for some major errors on the part of a few second years that would distract the professor.

Potions could be a cool subject — when they actually got to brew things — but there was also often a lot of waiting. It would be ten minutes of watching their potion sit on medium heat. Fortunately, Rosie would be a fun person to pass the time with. He hadn’t liked her when they first met, but she had grown on him. “Yup, I am. But no I can’t. I’m supposed to be able to at some point, but I can’t right now. It’s supposed to get better as I get older. Hair is easiest and eyes.” He demonstrated this by giving himself a curly black mop of hair and blue eyes.

Nawh, that’s too bad. Otherwise, we would both look old.” Rosie said. Through all the classes, she had noticed that it was easy to see which boys were first years and which were second years. During the winter formal, she noticed it even more. As one of the tallest of her year, she wasn’t used to taller boys accompanying her. However, Milo – her winter formal ‘date’ – showed her that the older year had a lot of taller boys. While he was a few inches taller than her, Eric was a few shorter. She liked it that way though. It boosted her confidence a little bit, being taller than most of her classmates that were. However, she was prepared for the future. The future where all of her male friends would probably be a lot taller than her. Hopefully, she took after Sofia and would be a quite tall. That would be helpful in Quidditch. Sometimes, she felt like her short limbs – compared to other teammates – were holding her back from saving some goals.

Rosemary was intrigued by Eric’s skills, especially when he showed her. “My sister would be so jealous of you,” the girl played with his new hairdo, giggling a little bit. Rosie always annoyed her older sister during summer breaks when Sofia was trying to study for transfiguration – a subject that Rosie wasn’t particularly interested in. “It does suit you though,” she gave him a thumbs up after pointing out the curly hair. The ten minutes would be done soon, so Rosie started the think about the next step. “I think we need to add some extra mixture,” she said, not sure if that was right.

Fortunately, or rather, unfortunately, a female voice corrected her. “You should first add some water and then add 1 bat spleen to the cauldron.” Slowly, Rosie turned her head, seeing an old woman with redhead beside their table. “Hello, professor O’Reilly.” Her face was filled with fear and panic. They got caught…

Was Mae really getting mad? After all the drama involving the advanced students, she was probably gotten even crazier. She could have sworn that the last work table in the row wasn’t occupied at the beginning of her lesson. The students at the table looked like they could be in the second year, but it felt somehow wrong to think that in the redhead’s mind. She had been busy supervising the second years. The first year had a more theoretical, yet important subject, so they didn’t need any help. They couldn’t blow up things, which was the most important for Mae. She didn’t want more students to go to Kiva and complain about her way of teaching.

The potions professor glanced from time to time to the duo at the back row. The boy felt quite familiar to her than the girl. However, she had always been bad at remembering important things at important times. Fortunately, she got confirmation that she wasn’t crazy. Those two weren’t second years. They had gone to the other side of the classroom in a sneaky way. So sneaky that the witch hadn’t even noticed it. The first thing that gave it away was the different ingredients on their table compared to the second years. The second thing was the boy changing his hair to black curls. She knew it. The Animagus boy was a student in her house, Eric Dobson. The woman – as the head of the Wampus house – knew of the boys’ skills and knew that he belonged in the first year.

So, Mae approached the table, waiting for them to finish their fluffy talk. She immediately noticed that the two students were making a swelling solution, and they had done a pretty good job. Well… Until the Asian girl tried to add something that shouldn’t be added. “You should first add some water and then add 1 bat spleen to the cauldron,” she told them in a monotone voice, trying to be a strict professor. She had her hands on her hips and she looked at the two students, especially Eric. From Sata and other sources, she knew that the boy liked getting himself into trouble.

So… Give me at least three good reasons why I shouldn’t give you detention.

Eric laughed when Rosie ruffled his hair. It was nice to get a compliment too. A lot of people considered it to be a cool ability, but he had also gotten some nasty comments about it. He always pretended to have a completely positive outlook about his ability, since it was pretty cool, but there was also underlying self-doubt and insecurity issues. Being a metamorphmagus made him so undeniably magical and it was a part of him that he was afraid his mother didn’t like. After all, she had left all of that behind.

Back to the potion, though. Eric tried to remember the rest of the instructions. It was a simple potion, but potions were awfully easy to mess up. “Um, I think… “ he was about to correct Rosie when someone else spoke up next to them. Eric turned slowly to look at their professor, his newly acquired curls flopping into his eyes. Crap. It was all too clear from the corrected directions that the professor realized that they were neither working on the assigned potion nor actually second years.

Eric gave his best winning smile, hoping to perhaps charm his way out of too severe of a punishment. “Um, well… “ he desperately tried to think of some good excuse that might help them out of the situation. “We were trying to challenge ourselves. We, uh, we really wanted to, um, expand our knowledge of potions.” Eh, maybe not the best choice of words given that they had been trying to brew a swelling solution. He glanced over to Rosemary, hoping that she could think up some additional good excuses.

Excuses? Three of them? Rosemary had never been great at improvising in the moment of fear and panic. In Quidditch matches, she had to improvise sometimes, which went well most of the time. Compared to real life, she could practice different scenarios with her teammates and there was always some kind of move for every moment. This situation was nothing like a Quidditch match. In the past, she had gotten into trouble by running away from home to explore the world. Her relatives always caught her before she could even get out of the protective barrier that made their mansion invisible for non-maj eyes. Even then, she couldn’t think of good excuses. She didn’t need to. Her grandparents weren’t super strict. They were just protective.

Eric was impressive in her eyes. How could he just put on a smile in front of the professor? Rosie was about to cry when she noticed the short redhead. His first excuse was masterful done, so she waited for him to continue. Unfortunately, the Wampus glanced at her. He wanted her to say an excuse, as well? But she was bad at it! Wasn’t he always getting himself in trouble? Rosie had seriously thought that the wizard would have a list of excuses ready to go. All of the hope in her eyes went away. “Uhmm… yeah expand,” the Korean-Canadian glanced to every possible object nearby so that she could avoid the professor’s eyes, before landing on her shoes. “We thought you might like our interest in brewing and we wanted to surprise you with our skills, Professor.” That were two, right? There was an awkward silence before she heard a scoff. Rosemary looked up to see that the professor was shaking her head

Professor O’Reilly scoffed, shaking her head with a smile that couldn’t believe the poor excuses that she had heard. The student from her house did even seem to want to charm his way out of detention with a smile. “Challenge yourself?” the woman smirked a little bit. In her eyes, brewing a potion that was their skill level didn’t seem much like a challenge. The two students seemed to have some clue what they were doing, so they weren’t expanding their knowledge. “I see that the both of you suck at giving excuses. Don’t know if I should praise that, or be disappointed.” Why would they want to surprise her? With what? An explosion and a lot of mess to clean up.

If you wanted to brew something that badly, you could have just asked. I might have been kind,” the lady crossed her arms in front of her chest, sighing. “Now you almost made the potion explode because of lack of supervision. I don’t like to get a surprise to you that is potentially dangerous.” Mae really didn’t want to get into more trouble with the headmistress. The kids that ignored her instructions made it hard for her. What if they had been so stupid to add ingredients that could cause a big explosion and hurt other students? She would be the person responsible. “You can continue with the potion if you at least get the book with a recipe. You will hear at the end of class if you will get detention. I also expect the vial essay done by next week. I know it’s boring, but it is essential to match the right potion with the right vial for longevity ” The redhead gave both of them a glance before returning to her second years. From time to time, she would look back at the two of them.

As Rosie stumbled over her excuse, Eric’s heart sank a little. They were probably going to get in trouble. He kept the smile on his face, though, hoping that Professor O’Reilly would be lenient with them. Getting in trouble didn’t bother him much, but he would rather not have to go back to looking at vials. That would be the worst punishment really. If they got detention, it would probably be together and that wouldn’t be terrible. The last time he got detention he ended up becoming sort of friends with Tanya. It was a great bonding experience!

The situation didn’t look too good as Professor O’Reilly told them that they were bad at making up excuses. But then she went on and Eric was somewhat shocked that they weren’t actually in much trouble. They could even continue brewing and got an extension on the vials essay. That they might still get detention wasn’t an issue. It was the here and now that mattered to Eric.

Once Professor O’Reilly left them, Eric turned to Rosie, a triumphant grin on his face. “Excellent!” He pulled his book out of his bag and quickly flipped to the recipe for the swelling solution. “Hopefully that little detour didn’t mess up our timing too much,” he said, quickly going about measuring and adding the water. “I”m so glad we don’t have to do that vials essay until next week.”
