Lotta had never been a fan of defense against the dark arts. She understood the purpose of it and needing to learn how one could defend themselves, but the class also taught them how to harm others too and she was not as comfortable with that training as others were. As much as she wanted to know what she could of the Dark Arts (which, really, wasn’t all that much she felt like she ought to know), Lotta could do without the violence and negativity that surrounded the subject matter. It just wasn’t how the Pukwudgie felt was needed in her life.

She smiled to Professor Scribe as she entered the room, familiar with his face as she was with every other professor since he had substituted quite a few lessons this year and took her seat towards the front of the room. Lotta was only a fourth year, but she had already been considering what classes to take in order to pursue her future as a possible advisor to the High Witch. She thought that Defense was a subject she could drop and it wouldn’t affect her chances too terribly. If anything, she could simply study on her own without the constant duels and learning of horrible spells that she would never use outside of this classroom. She would need to speak with her Grandmother though to know for certain as to what would look better for her for when she became fully involved in the community and in favor to the High Witch.

Lotta sighed when the Professor mentioned what they would be doing that day. It was the exact thing that she did not witch to do. She hated the idea of throwing any sort of spell at a class mate that may end up hurting them, even if that was not her intention. Could they not do that with dummies? Or was it simply because they needed to counter the spells that they had to do it with someone else? Lotta worried about what would happen if something went wrong and how she may end up sending someone to the hospital. She was not the best with transfiguration work, but she was steadily growing stronger with her spell work in other areas. But, aside from that, Lotta was not very fast on her feet. What happened if she couldn’t get out of the way? That would be so embarrassing.

She stood up and looked around for a partner. Niamh would have been her first choice because she felt the most comfortable with her but Kyara was becoming a close second the more time they spent together. Of course, there was Dominic too. She hadn’t really spent any time with him this year. But he was the sort who enjoyed this and Lotta was not. Frowning, she looked around, maybe Agda would but Lotta didn’t want to her hamper her sister’s learning at all.

Before Lotta would figure anything out, someone else approached her first.

Defense Against The Dark Arts scared Olyvia quite a bit. The subject had a bit different – less mysterious and evil sounding – name in her previous two schools. Perhaps the different language had given the class a different feel. The girl didn’t particularly like violence of any sort, even if it was minor. She had only used it a couple of times in her life, to push back the bullies from her youth. Even though Olly was quite bold, she would instantly run away from people that practiced the dark arts, like the inner scaredy-cat that she was.

The dark-skinned girl was a bit nervous to enter the room. She honestly didn’t know what to expect during this lesson, just hoping that it would be something boring like writing an essay. Her first surprise was seeing the professor. She had seen him in corridors and during dinner or breakfast at the staff table before. Her first impression of him wasn’t that of a professor that gave Defense against the Dark Arts. Somehow, he looked a bit too young and too inexperienced to talk about such negative, dangerous subjects. Nonetheless, Olyvia listened to the instructions of the young man that probably wasn’t even a decade older.

Her biggest worry of every class was who she sat next to. Most a students had best friend or a group of friends to choose from and Olly still felt a bit of an outsider with no group of friends. Luckily, Professor Scribe threw that worry right out of the window by telling that they could stay standing. A bit weird. They weren’t going to do something physical were they? Before the girl could start worrying again, she already heard the assignment of this lesson. Dueling. Olyvia’s eyes went to the door, trying to think of an escape. She hated dueling, especially at Uagadou. Most students over there would always win, because they barely needed a wand. The curly-haired student also didn’t believe Scribe’s words. Wasn’t practicing spells on one another considered dueling, even though it wasn’t competitive?

Additionally, Olly had to find a dueling partner. Everybody was already going to their preferred partner and Olyvia’s eyes were trying to find Agda. They – sort of – promised each other to work together during class sometime. This was the perfect opportunity. However, it was hard to find the blonde girl. Instead of the third year, her eyes stopped at an older student that looked similar to the Wampus girl. Would that be her sister? Olly approached the girl, poking her shoulder. “Are you Lotta?” she asked, hoping that she hadn’t approached the wrong person, “Do you wantch chu partner up?

Lotta did not know the girl personally who approached her, though she had seen her new face within the classroom. Lotta assumed that she had transferred in after midterm so she smiled in her general direction as she approached her. She always had the first impression anxiety when meeting new people and since she did not know this girl’s style of magic or if she was generally enthused by this type of lesson, it made her anxiety even worse. She was trying to work on it, of course, but she had grown comfortable with her group of friends that she hadn’t really needed to think about it. Now that she was faced with a new face, she had to remind herself to calm her fidgety hands and take a breath. It would be okay.

To her surprise, the other girl knew her name already. The surprise probably showed on her features too as she took in the girl’s appearance with confusion. She didn’t think they had formally met yet. “I am Lotta.” She agreed. “I apologize, but I do not know your name. Should I?” She asked politely because she didn’t want to seem rude and have forgotten hers. “I would be happy to partner, though I should warn you that I am not very quick with my spell work. I have to often think of the word in Swedish first before doing it properly.” Lotta admitted abashedly. “I will never be one for the duel club, thankfully.” She added with a small laugh.

Panicking, Olyvia was definitely panicking. The confusion on the face of the blonde girl, who she thought was Agda’s older sister. Their features seem to be similar, but maybe that was because she wasn’t used to seeing blonde hair and blue eyes in her country. She gulped out of awkwardness. Fortunately, it seemed to be that the girl, who she had approached, was Lotta. Her facial features changed from being awkward to those of joy. “Oh great, I tfought I mistook you for someone else for a second,” she said without thinking that it would probably sound weird from Lotta’s perspective. They didn’t even know each other. “Oh no, no, no. You do notch have chu apologize,” Olly chuckled awkwardly as she tried to gesture with her arms that she really didn’t have to by crossing them in front of her.

I am Olyvia, Agda’s friend.” To be polite, she offered her hand to shake it with her classmate. Olyvia could call herself the younger girl’s friend, right? Their talk during the return feast made them get pretty close. They also had talked a few more times, casually. The two were quite a good fit as friends, so she hoped that it would go like that with Lotta, as well. Olly liked making new friends, or even acquaintances. “She told me aboutch you,” she told the Pukwudgie to make it more clear to her why she knows Lotta’s name.

Olly was gleeful that Lotta agreed to partner up to practice dueling. “Do notch worry, I have the same issue,” she gave the blonde girl a reassuring smile, “I am Brazilian.” The curly-haired girl remembered seeing a dueling club at the sign-up sheets when she signed up for the drama club. The two seemed to be similar in the regard. “Same,” Olyvia laughed, “I am notch a big fan of dueling.

Oh, she was friends with Agda, that made some sense. They had probably worked together in a previous class and family popped up. Lotta talked a lot about her siblings with her friends and in casual conversation with people who were just acquaintances. It was an easy topic to get into and so it was easier to get acquainted with someone when you discussed something on a more personal level. The only issue Lotta had was talking about Eira. She loved her sister very much, but Eira was very different than Lotta and her other siblings. Lotta never wanted to give anyone the wrong impression of her sister, but she also didn’t want them to underestimate her sister either.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Olyvia.” Lotta said with a smile. The accent that the other girl had was not one that Lotta recognized. It was thicker and a bit hard for Lotta to understand immediately. Being someone from Sweden and having an accent of her own, she completely understood how difficult it was to speak English without having the strong accent. Olyvia’s accent was quite prominent so it was taking Lotta a moment to really register the words that she was saying. She just needed a couple minutes of talking to her to be able to adjust to it and then she would be okay. “Hopefully, they were all nice things.” Lotta teased. She highly doubted Agda would have said anything negative but one never really knew.

Lotta’s brows went up when Olyvia explained that she was from Brazil. Well, that mystery was solved. “Well, since neither of us enjoy the idea of Dueling and need those extra moments to think of spells properly, let’s just do this slowly instead of a competition? What do you say?”

Lotta seemed to be as kind as Agda. The younger Gardie had helped Olyvia when she was lost, so she was eternally grateful. Perhaps the Gardie family shared some kind of kindness gene. The similarities between the two made her wonder. What would her life be like if she had a younger sister? Would they look alike? There was a big probability that her ‘younger sister’ wouldn’t even be a witch like her. Both of her parents were squibs. It was a miracle. Even her maternal grandmothers hadn’t expected their grandmother to be a witch. Apparently, they had given up on magical grandchildren after her mother told them that she had a baby with another squib. The Thunderbird had mixed feelings about her maternal grandparents as they had forced her to continue attending Castelobruxo, after a year full of bullying and low grades. However, now she was kind of grateful. The wizarding world was a lot more intriguing than her first impression, even though she still didn’t like to duel or use spells on other humans.

The Pukwudgie’s smile was heartwarming, and it made her feel quite welcome. “Nice chu meet you chuu,” Olly returned the smile. Even though it was the first time they met, the dark-haired girl didn’t feel like talking to a stranger. Perhaps it was the aura that Lotta had, or the fact that she was related to a kind person like Agda. How did that proverb go? Birds of a feather flock together. It would probably be applicable to the two sisters, since they are family after all. The teasing tone of her classmate’s voice surprised her a bit, but Olyvia appreciated it. People mostly teased other people if they were comfortable. “Even if she did, I won’t tell,” Olly chuckled, “I do notch want chu getch Aggie in trouble.” She didn’t remember the younger Gardie telling her anything bad about Lotta. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have approached the older Gardie.

Olyvia noticed that the Pukwudgie raised her eyebrows when she told her that she was from Brazil. There were probably not many other students from her part of the world. Another possibility was that the girl had already expected it by hearing Olly’s heave accent. “Thatch would be perfect!” she agreed, getting her wand from the inside of her robes. “Is there anything you want chu try?” Even after following the classes in the past three to four months, the Thunderbird still didn’t know. “We could practice something innocentch like the tickling charm or maybe the disarming charm.

Lotta gave a soft laugh. She doubted Agda would have said anything negative about Lotta so she knew that Olyvia was playing with her. If it had been Eira that Olyvia was referring to, Lotta might have honestly believed that her sister had likely said some unpleasant things about her. That was just how Eira was. There was no rhyme or reason to her sister’s behavior and despite how much patience and support Lotta showed Eira, her sister was just too stubborn and in her own ways for the two of them to ever really be close. Agda, however, was very by the book about things and wouldn’t say something that wasn’t true about another person. It just wasn’t in her nature.

She was still adjusting to the accent that Olyvia was speaking with as they moved to start the classwork and were discussing how to go about it. Lotta nodded as she listened to some thoughts that Olyvia had regarding some of the spells. “Those are good ones to try. There’s also the jelly-legs jinx and the leg locking curse…” Lotta said as she tried to think about what sort of spells they could try that would work for the lesson without putting the other one in harm's way. “Oh, as there is Tarantallegra and we can use Langlock as a defensive measure.” She offered. She figured those would at least give them grades for participation even if they weren’t fast with their spell work. “Would you like to start?” Lotta asked politely.

Olyvia was glad that Lotta appreciated her joke. That was a good start as classmates. If they shared the same humor, they perhaps could become friends. The Brazilian liked making new friends, especially with people as kind as the Pukwudgie. After she offered some spells, the blonde girl did as well. The Jelly-Legs Jinx interested her the most. It was the jinx that she could translate the fastest from Brazilian to English. At least the fastest of the ones that Lotta had named. It was a bit weird, though. She never really performed the spell before. Even in her previous schools, she refrained from dueling or hurting others. Olyvia had seen some bullies from the African school do the spell on one of the students. The school was the biggest wizarding school, so bullies were present, as well. What made it more annoying was that a lot of students could perform wandless magic. So the bullies could say that they didn’t mean to do it and got away without any punishment.

The curly-haired girl wasn’t one of those victims, luckily. The bullies were mostly calling her a fake witch or a squib, so verbal bullying. Olly liked Ilvermorny a lot more than her previous schools. She wasn’t being bullied here. That was mostly also because nobody really knew that her parents were squibs. In her first year at Castelobruxo, she had told that fact with proud. In her third year at Uagadou, her cousins had told people as if they were disgusted by her. The American school was filled with kind people, including the Gardies who felt like angels to her, especially because of the blonde hair and pale skin.

Sure, I will do tfe Jelly-Legs Jinx,” she said, thinking it would be nice to give Lotta a heads up. The Thunderbird did a few steps away from her classmate. There needed to be a bit of distance between people to duel properly, even though their version would be really slow. Olyvia copied the dueling stance after looking around and finding someone that looked good at it. It felt weird to point her wand at the other girl. She still did it, so that she at least participated in the class. Slowly, and calm she performed the Jelly-Legs Jinx and a weak, orange light erupted from her wand and soared towards Lotta. Her eyes were filled with worry. She actually hoped that it didn’t hit her.

"Are you okay?"

Lotta stood a little away from her the way the rest of the group was and faced Olyvia. Even though she was not very happy about having to throw spells at another classmate, she was happy that Olyvia felt the same way as her which meant that they could take their time and work things out together rather than her having to run around and dodge spells because she was not quick enough in the thought process to really handle a partner that was all about competition. She supposed that was why she and Charlie got on so well. He was not an aggressive being whatsoever and Lotta felt comfortable and confident around him because of that.

With Olyvia confirming which spell she was planning on using, Lotta was able to work out a deflection spell rather easily and prepared herself without as much worry or anxiety over their lesson as she might have otherwise.

As Olyvia shot the spell at her, Lotta felt the squeeze in her chest from the stress but she quickly shot her deflective spell that hit hers and both shot off away from them. Lotta smiled at Olyvia’s concern and she nodded. “Yes. Knowing what you are shooting at me definitely helped me. Thank you.” Lotta replied.

“I will try the leg Lock spell. Are you ready?” Lotta asked. When she received confirmation that Olyvia was ready, Lotta sent the spell in her direction.

The Pukwudgie luckiky managed to deflect the jinx that Olyvia had shot at her. The smile from Lotta brought a smile on her face, as well. "Really? Thatch is greatch," she said excitedly. They had found their approach to duelling. It would probably help them a lot. The worry in her heart - that had started from the beginning of the class - died down. She was glad that she had found someone to duel with that was in a similar situation.

Lotta announced her offensive spell. For a few seconds, Olly thought about the defensive spells she had learned previously. They were limited, because her previous school liked to focus on Transfiguration. The curly-haired witch gave her classmate a confident nod after translating one of her most familiar protectice spells in her head.

The offensive spell came towards her after her confirmation. Olly quickly used a protective spell to deflect the Leg Lock spell. She felt a bit of impact from the spell through her wand, but her charm was strong enough to keep Lotta's hex away from her body. "Itch does indeed help," the Thunderbird shot her classmate a smile. "Thatch spell was pretty powerful" she complimented Lotta. The girl wrote a mental note down that she should put some defensive spells on her practice list.

"Do you mind being on tfe offense, again?" she politely asked her classmate with her heavy Brazilian accent, "I noticed thatch I lack in defensive spell knowledge and practice."

Lotta had been so worried about things when she had first heard about the lesson and how she was going to handle it, but it seemed to have all worked out for the best with Olyvia being her partner. Classes could be so stressful for Lotta whenever she was required to have a partner because her thought process was in Swedish but the spells were in latin or English and it took her a bit of time to translate comfortably. Not everyone was so understanding. Thankfully, Olyvia had a similar issue. This was a nice pattern between them and it certainly made Lotta feel more confident about her spellwork.

“Of course!” Lotta said when Olyvia asked her to be on the offense again. “Whatever you need to help practice, I do not mind.” Lotta ran through the list of spells that she knew pretty well from previous lessons and then waited for Olyvia to prepare herself. “Whenever you are ready.” Lotta said with a polite smile. When she was given the okay once more and Lotta felt that Olyvia seemed prepared, Lotta told her that she would be using the bat-bogey hex has her spell so that Olyvia could prepare the best sort of defensive spell against it.

After a moment, Lotta took her stance and then shot the spell towards her opponent, hoping that it didn’t actually strike the girl.

OOC: We can start closing this up, if you like?
