Viv peaked her head from the side of the doorframe, which led to the enormous library that the school had. It was in the afternoon, and classes had just stopped. Classes that the elfish girl didn’t particularly like. History of Magic was the only class that seemed to be neutral in her mind, and even the topics within those classes were confusing her a lot. Luckily, it was mostly theoretical. Something that wasn’t the case with the classes where they had to perform spells... Sometimes, she thought it would just be better to leave the cursed wand of hers on her nightstand. It didn’t work anyway. With every new class, she was getting even more confident in the fact that they had made a mistake. That she was actually just a normal human, or how they called it: a non-maj.

Still, Viv didn’t want to give up. Despite feeling like an outcast – even though she had friends – she felt less like an outcast at Ilvermorny then at the circus. Besides, the food was too delicious to give up on. Back at ‘home’, she only ate bread because nobody remembered that she perhaps also liked to eat some mac n cheese or mashed potatoes. Unfortunately, if she wanted her stay to be as enjoyable as possible, she had to know how to read. Like the independent child she was, the blonde witch wasn’t used to asking help of adults. The adults back at the circus never helped her. She had learned to tie her shoelaces all by herself, and by observing parents doing it for their little children in the middle of the festivities.

Learning how to read, that was the reason why Viv found herself at the opening to the library. It was filled with books that she would probably never be able to read. Not because of the time… But because of the fact that she was probably legit the only one that didn’t have the skill to read a single word. She could sing the alphabet because she had heard other kids sing it before. However, she wouldn’t know how to write the letters or in which order… After deeply inhaling, the tiny girl took her first steps into the unknown area. Apparently – she had done some research by asking her friends about how libraries worked – there would be a librarian that might be able to help her.

People had described him as a really tall, creepy man. So, her green eyes started to immediately search for the most adult-looking person in the place. After a quick look around, she had found someone at the front desk – at least it seemed like a front desk – that was definitely not a student. The man looked like a rock. However, he didn’t seem all that creepy like people had told her. As a former circus she had seen all kinds of unique people, so someone that was super tall and muscular didn’t really seem creepy. Seeing a feather fly with no string and only with the power of a wooden stick actually did scare the crap out of her.

With tiny steps, Viv approached the librarian. She had a hesitant smile on her face as she just remembered what she was going to ask. It was probably one of the weirdest. “Sir…” her soft voice said to get the attention of the adult, yet not draw attention to herself so that everybody would know what she was going to ask. “Are there any books that help people read?” Her voice sounded insecure and tiny, like her stature.

After a rather eventful summer, Sata was almost on some level glad to be back at the school full-time. His trip to Ireland had been entertaining to say the least. Being practically brought into Gabe’s family fold was weird. Good, but weird. It didn’t exactly feel like home, but it didn’t feel soo foreign anymore either. Gabe’s parents were great people. Sata was glad that Gabe had the chance to grow up with them. He kinda wished that he could have as well, but that hadn’t been in the cards for him. Shit happens. He grew up to be a fairly decent human being in some respects so he really couldn’t complain.

Sata sat behind the front desk of the Library going over a stack of returns and trying to stay busy. He was still a little surprised that Dupree hadn’t spoken to the headmistress about the incident that had taken place during the end of the summer, where he belted the jerk in one of the local taverns. He was fairly certain that the jerkface was going to go have a talk with his boss and have him canned. It had yet to happen much to his surprise. Sata wasn’t really one to look a gift horse in the mouth though. He wasn’t going to waste a lot of time thinking of the jackass while he was working. Dupree wasn’t worth the effort.

Sata was busy doing the check-in for returned books when he thought he saw a small blonde come towards the front desk. Sata didn’t pay much attention to the little blonde. If she wanted something, she merely had to speak up. “Sir…Are there any books that help people read?” Her voice had been soo damn soft Sata wasn’t entirely sure that he had heard her at first. Sata glanced up from the stack of books in front of him to study the small girl in front of him. She had to be one of the new first years from the size and look of her. “There might be a few on the shelves that can help with that problem,” he told her, resting his elbows on the desktop. Sata rested his chin on his palm as he studied the little booger-eater.

It was one of the first times that anyone had ever asked to look at books to help with reading. He knew there were a few How-To books, but he wasn’t certain that those books were ones that taught someone to read. Sata knew that there was a very small selection of books that could be used to help the child so what she was hoping to do. “Why don’t you go sit at the table right over there,” Sata pointed to a table in the corner that was empty, “While I go find those books for you?” Sata offered, nodding his head towards the table he had already pointed out to her. When he was sure she was settled into a seat, Sata went over to the section of the Library where he was pretty certain the reading books were and set about looking for one or two of them.

Sata browsed the shelf for a moment and sighed when he couldn’t find the ones he was looking for. “Something wrong Brute?” Sata heard Agnes ask him. “Where did ya have the aides move the damn books on learning to read Ags?” Sata asked the older spectre, practically growling at her. “Next aisle over Neanderthal and I didn’t have them move anything I’ll have you know,” Agnes snapped at him, a hint of amusement in her voice. Sata mumbled a “Thank you” to her and went in search of the books he needed for the child. “What’s the matter Brute? Forget your ABCs?” Agnes teased him as he pulled a couple of the books down from the shelf to inspect them. “Hardly Ags,” Sata quipped back, mostly ignoring her. “They’re for one of the students,” he told her absently, looking over the books in his hand. “Oh?” Agnes asked, now intrigued by the idea that one of the students might need assistance somehow.

“Yep...my guess is she has an issue with reading,” Sata commented, pleased with what he found. “Perhaps I could help the poor child,” Agnes said to him, glancing over to see if she could spot the student in question. Sata chuckled at the old bat. “No offense Ags, but umm...you might just scare the s**t out of the poor kid,” he grinned at the ghost. Agnes scoffed at him. “Oh...and you don’t?” she retorted, still amused slightly. Sata shrugged. “She came to me didn’t she? I’m guessing I don’t scare her that much, but you’re welcome to try talking to her if you want to,” Sata told the former teacher, walking back to the table where he left the little blonde girl. Setting the books down on the table, Sata took the seat across from her. “These ones might do you the most good,” he told the girl. Sata heard a coughing sound coming from behind him and rolled his eyes in irritation. “The nosy see-through lady behind me wants to know if you’d like her to help you with the books I just gave you,” Sata told the child, moving a bit so that the blonde girl could see Agnes for herself. “Feel free to tell her NO if you want to...I do it all the time,” Sata shot Agnes a grin before turning back to the first year. “Its up to you kid.”

The tiny blonde felt a bit awkward as she noticed the man behind the desktop studying her. Did she look as incompetent as she sounded? Despite his watchful eyes, Viv managed to produce a smile on her face when the librarian told her that there would probably be a few books on the shelves that could potentially help her. It immediately got rid of the worst scenario that she had imagined. In her mind, the probability that there weren’t any non-magical books present in the library of a magic school was high. The probability that there weren’t any books about learning how to read was even higher. The orphan was probably the only kid at the school that needed those kinds of books.

Luckily, the words of the old wizard had helped her get rid of those worries. Instead, he suggested her to sit down at a table, while he was going to search for the specific books. Her gaze followed his hand that pointed at one of the tables nearby. “Okay,” Viv nodded with a content smile and walked over to the table as cheerful as she was. Finally, some hope was getting into her mind. Only after she had taken a seat, the librarian – who was like expected a lot taller than him – went on his way to get the materials for her to learn how to read. His height made her wonder if the man was a half-giant. However, her thoughts full of wonder changed rapidly as she observed the library’s layout and its shelves.

While Viv was waiting for the presence of the librarian, and the books that she needed. She heard muffled sounds of people speaking, but her tiny ears couldn’t make any sense of it. Luckily, it didn’t take long for the giant-like man to return with a couple books, taking a seat across from her. Automatically, she corrected her posture, which was something she immediately did near those older than her. “Thank y-“ The young Pukwudgie wanted to thank the librarian, but a sudden sound of a cough made her stop. There was someone else there? The eye roll from the wizard confirmed the presence, and it made her curious. Something that she shouldn’t have been. “See-through?” she mumbled, a bit confused. Viv lifted herself a bit up from her seat out of curiosity, which didn’t really help because of the bulky, tall man. Fortunately – or unfortunately – the man moved a little bit.

As soon as her eyes observed the old woman, the cute rose color on Viv’s cheeks disappeared and her entire complexion became as white as snow. The woman behind the librarian was definitely see-through, transparent, not human. How was that possible? How was Viv able to see the things behind the lady? Slowly, her arms went underneath the table to pinch herself in the leg. Alright, it was definitely not a dream. Her eyes were widened out of shock, and fear. She could feel her body tremble a little bit, and the scared green orbs looked at the man, screaming for help. However, he just talked to her as if the thing was human… As if the lady could help her read… Why was he grinning, wasn’t he bothered by a presence of something unexplainable?

S-sir… What d-do you mean by h-help?” Her voice sounded as if she was about to cry, “Isn’t that f-fake?” Somehow, it felt awkward to call the lady a ‘that’, but Viv was in denial. It must definitely be a joke or some kind of wicked spell. She gave the transparent thing a quick glance, which made her feel even more uncomfortable.

Sata merely nodded when the little first year thanked him and watched her go sit down where he had instructed her to. Sata had gone to get the books for her, but was waylaid by Agnes. Agnes...who insisted on joining him at the table on the off-chance that the kid waiting for him might want her assistance. Sata didn’t see the kid wanting the help of a ghost, but stranger things have happened. Sata put the books down on the table for the young girl and sat down across from her. He was in the process of explaining to the girl that he was willing to help her with the books, when he and the girl were interrupted by Agnes. Sata half-assed introduced the girl to the ghost behind him, moving a bit so that she could see Agnes for herself.

Sata couldn’t help noticing the lace of fear in the child’s wide green eyes when she caught sight of the spectre behind him. Poor kid looked scared s**tless of her. “Ags...do us both a favor and disappear for a while will ya?” he asked her, turning slightly towards the ghost. Agnes hurmphed at the man. “And what on earth would I do that for?” she demanded behind him, huffing when Sata ignored her. His focus was currently on the frightened child in front of him. “Unfortunately kiddo, she is very real and she is insisting she can help you read,” he told the girl, trying to ignore the pissy lady ghost behind him. “Have you never seen a real ghost before?” he asked the kid sitting in front of him. He knew not all of the kids at the school had seen a ghost before. Perhaps this little girl was one of the few who hadn’t before. If that was the case, then she was in for a weird surprise.

To be honest, Viv didn’t know where to look. She wanted to avoid any eye contact because she thought she would turn to stone if she looked the transparent old woman in the eyes. So the little girl quickly removed her gaze away from the situation and stared at her lap. She tried to control her breathing, but it didn’t really work.

Her skin kept being pale and her brain couldn’t process it properly. Was there some kind of scientific logic behind the woman being transparent, or maybe it is something like technology. They wouldn’t be able to explain it with magic, right? No, it should be fake. However, that last thought was immediately thrown out of the window when the man told her that the transparent was in fact real.

The woman was a ghost. A ghost? A GHOST!? Viv slowly looked up, small tears were in the corners of her eyes about to roll down. She put her hands together to make them stop from trembling. Was the woman dead? Like, not alive anymore? To give an answer to his question, Viv nodded and her green eyes went to the transparent woman again. “N-Never,” her gaze went back to the Librarian, “S-So I uhmm.. can see d-dead people?

Sata pinched the bridge of his nose as he tried to stay calm with the pushy old ghost behind him. There were times that he welcomed Agnes' intrusion, however...this was NOT one of those times. He really wished that she had backed off like he had asked her to and left him to deal with the scared kid on his own. He was used to the kids around the school being scared of him. He was a scary dude when he really wanted to be. "Agnes...seriously! Could you please just back off for a bit before you scare the shit out of the poor kid?" he asked the old ghost again. Agnes huffed at him. "Such language," she grumbled. Sata rolled his eyes at Agnes as he glanced at her over his shoulder before looking back at the little blonde girl in front of him.

When the girl nodded, confirming that Agnes was in fact her first ghost, Sata sighed. Yep...this was not going to go over well. "I'm afraid so kiddo," he told the girl. "Everyone who's magical can see them. Hell, some muggles can as well, but that's not as common as us being able to see them," he explained to her. "Granted, as first ghosts go you could have done much worse than Ags here," he told her, poking fun at the slightly transparent woman behind him. Agnes snorted at him. Sata grinned, knowing he had managed to annoy the old biddy. "Ags...seriously though...could you please go find someone else to bother right now while I try to get blondie here to work with me without freaking out over you hovering around," he told the old ghost as politely as he could.

Agnes rolled her eyes at Sata as she snorted at him. "And whom precisely would you prefer that I go bother if I'm not needed here?" she asked him peevishly. Sata was going to give her some smartassed answer when he saw a much better idea walk into the Library at that moment. He could have kissed Shelby just then. She was like a flame-haired goddess come to save him from the evil harpy. "Why don't you go gab with Shelby while I work? I'm sure she'd be happy to let you bend her ear for a bit," he told Agnes, feeling a little bad that he just basically volunteered poor Shelby with "Entertaining Agnes" duty without asking her first. He would just make it up to her later. Seeing the new school nurse enter the room, Agnes huffed before floating away to find more stimulating company. Sata smiled at Shelby, nodding towards her before turning his attention towards the girl in front of him. "Okay..now that the transparent lady has finally left us alone...what do you say we get started huh kiddo?" he asked Viv.

Today was still one of those days that Shelby longingly wished were somewhere distant sightseeing until both her limbs and eyes hurt. It was definitely a struggle, especially now that she had a very important job to maintain and now that she was involved with a new man.

While ordering two buttered croissants to go in town, Shelby started thinking about her future summer-travels to Mykonos. It would be like relieving her former college years. Oh were those the wild days! Always partying like a crazy girl when she wasn't in class.

The redhead happily strolled back into Ilvermorny. She finished one of the croissants and decided to save the other for her new flame. He would no doubt be in the library and that's where she immediately walked to. As Shelby casually strolled in she locked eyes with Sata and smiled. He seemed to be tutoring this adorable blonde young'in. She quickly returned Sata's expression with one that seemed to translate to don't worry about it, it's all ok.

She didn't mind speaking with the old school ghost in the slightest. The fact that Sata was willingly helping this girl touched her heart and earned him some major points in her book. "Well if it isn't Ms. Aggie Duvall herself! I don't know if you recognize me... but it's lil' red...." She hoped the nickname made it apparent to who she was considering many people used it during her years as a student in Ilvermorny.

After using some language that the ghost didn’t seem to be fond of, even though Viv had heard that kind of language or even worse her entire life, the big librarian focused on her again. Her hands were still trembling, especially when the man confirmed that she could see dead people, ghosts. Things that made her scared in the middle of the night because of the scary stories that the circus people told her. ‘A ghost will steal you away’ and ‘it is going to take you where you belong. Nowhere’. She wanted to tell him that she wasn’t magical, so she shouldn’t be able to see them. However, he already explained that some non-magical people could also see them.

Her breathing started to get more heavy. It was something she couldn’t control. She had entered the library to learn how to read, not to meet a ghost and have a breakdown because of it. “W-Worse,” Viv stuttered. There were more terrifying ghost than the old lady behind him? At that moment, she really wanted to burst out in tears. However, the voices of the circus people were haunting her. There she was never allowed to cry. The bickering adults kept going even though she was breaking apart. It felt like such familiar situation. It felt like something identical to something that happened at ‘home’.

Viv looked down at her hands, only listening to the conversation that happened in front of her. She was too anxious to look at the transparent lady any longer. The name of a woman was mentioned, and as if time speeded up, the librarian focused back on the small witch. She only noticed it after his next words seemed to be addressed to her.

Started?” Viv looked up towards the man, a bit surprised. At that moment, she somehow forgot why she was there. “U-uhm, okay.” The blonde girl nodded.

Sata could have kicked himself when he saw the look on the kid's face when he told her she could have done worse as far as first ghosts went. She was already afraid of Aggie, why did he have to go and make it worse by telling her there were worse ones out there? He really had a big frickin mouth sometimes. "Yeah...there are, but none of them hang around the school so you're safe kid," Sata told her, trying to be honest with the girl and reassure her at the same time. It was weird.

Since Agnes was now being occupied by Shelby, Sata could get to work with the girl in front of him on her reading. Setting the book down on the table, Sata motioned for Viv to join him. Once she was seated, Sata turned the book around so that she could see the page. He had no problem reading the material upside down. "Alright kiddo, we're gonna start really easy with the Alphabet," he told her, opening to the page with the first letter. "This first letter is an A," he pointed out, pointing to the picture beneath it. "Can ya tell me what the picture off to the side of the letter looks like to you?" he asked her, encouraging Viv to participate with him. Sata went over each page like that; telling her the letter, asking her what the picture next to it was and moving onto the next one. He kept doing that until they reached the last page of the alphabet book.

Agnes smiled at Shelby as she moved to meet with the young woman. There was something about the school nurse that looked familiar to the old ghost. Aggie's face brightened when Shelby began speaking. She would know that sweet girl's voice anywhere. Not to mention the nickname. "Well as I float and don't breathe...Little Miss Shelby Maddox! How are you my dear?" Agnes greeted one of the former students from the school. "A little birdie told me that you are our new school nurse...is that true?" Agnes asked the redhead in front of her.
